A/N - Thought that I would mix it up a bit and write for Hiccup for a change.💙
The sky was a mixture of soft pinks and oranges and the clouds looked soft and fluffy. Toothless' wings cut through the air as he and Hiccup flew in the early evening sky. They soared high above the ocean, Hiccup enjoying the feeling of the wind gently rustling his hair.
Off in the distance were a cluster of sea stacks. These ones were far closer together than the ones that they had once flown through back at Berk, all those years ago, and both dragon and rider were in need of a challenge today. Especially one that would allow them to truly push the new tail he had designed to its limits.
"Ready, bud?" Hiccup asked his dragon as the sea stacks got closer. Toothless roared his excitement, making his rider chuckle. "Let's do this."
He adjusted his prosthetic foot and Toothless entered a dive. He opened up his wings just before they hit the water and they began to race toward the sea stacks. Hiccup lowered himself against Toothless' back, making them more streamline and took a deep breath. They could do this.
There was something about racing toward a maze of closely clustered sea stacks that sent a thrill through both man and dragon. It had his heart thundering against his chest, every muscle in him tensed as he got ready to change the position of Toothless' tail at a second's notice.
They shot past the first two and began to effortlessly weave in and out of the rest. The sea stacks became a great big grey blur while dragon and rider would be a complete black blur with a hint of red to anyone who was around to observe them. Which there usually wasn't during their sunset flights unless Astrid flew out to join them and today she had decided not to.
The maze was far bigger than they had anticipated, but that only added to the excitement and challenge of it. As they raced past the stacks, loose rocks fell down from high above them. While they bounced off of Toothless' body harmlessly, a couple hit Hiccup's helmet. They were moving too quickly for him to look back and up, but he was almost sure it wasn't just random debris falling down onto them.
The thought left him though as they burst out of the other side of the maze. With a roar, Toothless fired a plasma blast, much like he had done the first time, bathing both dragon and rider in flames. Hiccup laughed loudly and cheered.
"Hel yeah!"
Toothless began to gain altitude once more, soaring higher and higher, until they had burst through a cloud. Hiccup loved it up here. Up here he always felt so free. He could go anywhere he wanted. Just keep flying until he found a new land or dragon species to study and there was no one to stop him. Perhaps his father was right. Perhaps he and his best bud would eventually end up flying off of the edge of the world. So far though, with how far they had flown in the past few years since bringing peace to Berk, Hiccup had yet to see any of sign of the edge of the world, but that likely meant the world was just so much bigger than they could ever have imagined before.
He was so caught up in the feeling, he failed to notice the black blur headed straight for them.
One minute Hiccup was sitting on Toothless' back, a hand reaching outwards to skim through the clouds. The next something had ripped him off of his dragon's saddle and sent him flying through the air. He spun as he fell through the air and caught sight of what had thrown him. There was another Night Fury. The disbelief he felt was so much he briefly forgot about the fact that he was currently plummeting to his death. Something that Toothless had also not yet noticed, completely struck by shock at the sight of another of his species (his new tail allowing to stay hovering in place).
"Toothless!" Hiccup yelled as he continued to plummet.
Toothless finally snapped out of his trance and folded his wings close to his body, dropping like a stone, as he dived for his rider. It didn't take him long to catch up to Hiccup and moments before he hit the ocean, he was back in the saddle. A click came from his tail and dragon and rider levelled out and skimmed across the surface of ocean before racing back upwards to where the Night Fury had been.
