Getting My Lights Knocked Out

When Phillips, his friends, and I arrived at Dimond Field their coach wasn't there, so they just played a fun game. They let me bat and I wasn't too bad it but pitching was my favorite thing to do. I wasn't as good as Micheal but I could strike out a few players on the team. In the middle of a game I heard Josh scream from third base "What the hell are they doing here?"

I turn to look at him and notice the same kids from earlier today were on bikes but they're on the field. They're on the field and coming at full speed, full speed but not towards me, full speed and towards Thomas.

I hear Phillips screaming something about rejects but I'm too busy seeing if Thomas was going to move or if the kids were going to change directions. Instead of Thomas moving a kid with red curly hair came full speed at a puddle sitting next to Thomas and splashed him with muddy gross water. Thomas freaked out but before he could yell at anyone 4 other kids followed and splashed him too. The other few kids just circled around some of the players and left before anyone could say anything.

"Come back here you Sandlot freaks!" Thomas yells. I started to run after the kids and stopped at the gate they just busted open. "Hey! That's not okay!" i started but was cut of by someone saying,

"Yea and who cares?" The dark hair boy turned around and was laughing.

"You can't do that!" I yelled but before they turned the corner the dark hair boy yelled back at me. "Yea and who's gonna stop us?"

I turned back around the maddest i thought i would be that day.

"Ugh! How rude could they be?!" It was more of a statement than a question but I just need med to blow off a little bit of steam. "That was the definition of rude."

I mean Phillips friends weren't the nicest people ever but ruining someone's jersey? That's low. I ran to Thomas and told him he should go home to change and clean his uniform before it stains.

"I'm gonna kill those rejects," he bellows.

"Thomas the last thing you should be worrying about right now is them. If you don't get those clothes cleaned they will stain and you'll have to pay for a new uniform." I say before he gets even angrier.

"Tomorrow." he says to Phillips as he's putting his hand up to him nodding.

"Tomorrow." Phillips states.

Before I was gonna ask what "Tomorrow," meant Thomas walks away and gets on his bike the other follow and soon it's just me and Phillips left in the field.

"i can't believe those ignoramus  jokes" Philip's says.

"You know if your friends wouldn't have tried to purposely hurt them they wouldn't have splashed Thomas," i say in the kids defense. I was mad too but I understood why they did what they did.

"They wouldn't have tried to purposely hurt them if they didn't start a war with us," Phillips says rolling his eyes at what I said.

"What do you mean?" i ask

"Huh?" he looks genuinely confused by what I said.

"You said 'start a war' Finny, what do you mean start a war?"

"Look Ams,'" Philips is now infront of me with his hand on my arm, "Those Sandlot kids are our rivals. We don't talk to them cause we don't need to. They mess with us we mess with them. It's that simple, but we get carried away sometimes and things get out of hand. It's nothing you need to worry about okay?"

"Okay." i say. It's not "that simple" really. They just keep adding gasoline to the fire.

"How about I take you home," I know what he's gonna do so instead i make him a deal. I knew that afterwards he was gonna go to Thomas's house and just make him more angry.
