Chapter 8: Shauna

Holy fuck, she called me honey. She lifted my chin up with her finger.

"Nothing, I'm fine." I smile and it's genuine.

"No, you had a look in your eyes that told me something was wrong." She cups my face in her hands.

"I don't wanna bring it up in public." I look up at her with hope that she will understand.

"Why not honey?" She looks at me with genuine concern.

"It's about us." The words make me wanna throw up with the knowledge of why I need to talk to her about us.

"We're not gonna be in private for a long time, Shauna."

She called me by my actual name? Did I do something wrong?

I decide not to question it and I just shake my head and sigh. "I know."

The bus stops and we all get off of it. Jackie doesn't hold my hand and I understand why but it still hurts more than I know it should.

We go into the locker room and I look down while Laura Lee is mortified Jackie and I are gonna look at her changing.

"I mean why would we let..." She pauses and it looks like she almost throws up. "Lesbians." Another pause while she tries to compose herself so she doesn't actually throw up. "Into our locker room? They're just gonna look at us!"

"No we won't" Jackie and I both say at the same time. I shove my other shirt into my locker and Jackie puts on her jersey.

"But we let TWO lesbians on our team! Not one but two!" Laura Lee doesn't listen and she continues to talk because she doesn't know when to shut the fuck up.

"What if there are more?" Nat suddenly says, exhausted. "You know there are more." She stands up from the bench where she was sitting on while she was putting her shoes on. "I like women. There I fucking said it, I'm done hiding it."

"So do I." Tai steps in and she looks like she's about the cry. It's the first time I've seen her like this.

"And I'm her girlfriend." Van says as she stands up from her bench and grabs Tai's hand.

They're dating? Since when were they dating?

"A-And I'm dating Nat." Lottie says and grabs Nat's hand.

"We already knew that." Van says with a hint of a smile.

"I can't believe this." Laura lee says, completely shocked that almost everyone on the team is queer.

While she has a potential midlife crisis-because we don't know when she will die-I grab Jackie's hand and hold it too.
