I built a house
On a foundation of dreams
It's mortar mixed
By faith and hope
I dreamt of a garden
Surrounding it
Little ones would laugh and play
I would watch from
The veranda
With my beloved as the sunset
Paints the skies orange and purpleToday I arrive
From whence I came
To find a storm had torn
It down
I thought the foundation
Was strong
I thought I was done
With building houses
"Finally," I said to myself
"I will rest."
Tonight I rest outside aloneI built myself an empire
They are not built in a day
Brick by brick
I built it through
Trails and battles
I tore down kingdoms
Made their princes my subjects
Built citadels
I knew one day
I'll wear my crown as emperor
My enemies will bow
At the greatest throne
Built by men
In all my glory
They will have to admit
I'm the greatest of allToday I return
From whence I came
My walls have been brought down
My guards defeated
I thought I built the greatest empire
Like Mesopotamia, Egypt, Nubia
Like Babylon, Persia
Like Greece, Rome and Britain
Before
All empires fall
No man can rule the world
Alone
I stand defeated
Wondering where to start
Like Napoleon before
I had something to prove
Maybe they were right
Maybe I am in the wrong.
