JEWEL WAS in awe as she stared blankly at his husband who was grinning proudly ear to ear after announcing that his anniversary gift to her was this whole botanical garden. Then a thought came into her mind and she couldn't help but snicker and burst into laughter after hearing the funniest joke she's ever heard yet. "You're joking right? This can't be your anniversary gift to me?" There's no way that this whole garden is his gift to her.
Phoenix's previously enthusiastic face turned salty.
She stopped snickering. "Wait...you're actually serious?" 'He couldn't be serious.'
"Uh...Yes, I'm serious. 'This' is my anniversary gift. Why are you laughing at my gift? I don't see anything funny with it. Wait...maybe it's the wallpaper?" He looked around the place, scanning the flower patterned wallpaper. "Hmm...should I change it? But I ask your mom what wallpaper you would like."
"No, no...It's not the wallpapers. So you're not kidding about this place being the anniversary gift?"
Phoenix frowned. "What's wrong with it? Don't you like it? Is it not enough? Maybe I should have added an extra something to compliment this...maybe like an extra greenhouse or something. I knew I should have proceeded with that plan long ago---..."
"Hold your horses there Mr. Wade..." She stopped Phoenix from talking before he thinks of giving her another gigantic gift. "I get that you're serious...but...this is a huge gift! And I'm sure it took you a lot of money to buy this place."
"No. Mrs. Rickins actually gave me a discount when I bought this place when I said that I was giving it to you as anniversary gift."
"But I'm sure it was still really expensive. And compared to my gift..."
No...her gift is not even comparable to this to begin with.
"Ohh...I see where your worries are coming from." He chuckled and pulled her closer to him, gently wrapping his arms around her waist.
"Phoenix, my gift to you is a freaking neck tie!" She sniffed. "I never felt this puny in my life." She's not insulted or anything...Okay, maybe just a tiny bit... but still, her gift is literally nothing compared to this. If she had known, she would have given him a much better gift.
But then again, with her memories missing during that time, it's still going to be really hard to think for a better one.
This time, it was his turn to laugh. She glared at him. Her mind is still filled with the scale difference of the neck tie and the size of this place.
"Didn't I tell you that you didn't need to give any gift to give me?"
"B-but---."
She felt shivers when Phoenix landed a soft kiss on her neck and whispered, "Can't you just say thank you and be happy with the gift? You don't have to be burdened about its size or the money I used to buy it. You deserve this after everything that you've been through. And I was more than happy and excited to give it to you."
"But---."
"And also, it's the thought that always counts, isn't it?"
"But---."
She wanted to protest, but then she sighed and nodded after hearing his point. She's getting the feeling that Phoenix is getting smarter and smarter as the time went by. And that she's the one getting unreasonable.
"Thank you so much for the gift. I really love it." She said with full sincerity.
He's right. He wanted to give her something. And if by accepting his gift with full gratitude is what's going to make him happy, then she'll just have to accept it wholeheartedly. It's the least she could do for him for their anniversary.
