Alex POV - two weeks later

"Hi Carrie!" I smile as I open the door.

I hear barking and quickly turn to grab Blue, "Sorry, he's a big teddy bear."

She smiles, "It's okay. Ready for the home check?"

I nod, "Serv!"

He jogs in from the garage, "Sorry! Hi! I'm here!"

I grab his hand and squeeze.

"Right, no need to be nervous." He says and smiles.

"Okay, let's start in the kitchen. Do you guys cook at home a lot?"

"Yeah, Serv is a great cook and well, I'm trying." I say.

She nods, "You know Michaela has a food thing. She really isn't eating at the group home. Mostly pre-packaged snacks and she will eat at school after she watches someone eat the same food."

I nod, "We're not big pre-packaged snacks people, but we can get her some. I know that she's scared to eat."

She nods, "And the pool is gated? She's 13, but I don't know if she can swim."

I nod, "Yep!"

"Okay, and all liquor, any prescriptions up and locked away?"

"Yes ma'am. We have a locked liquor cabinet. Prescriptions are up and away." Serv says.

"Great!" She says.

"Upstairs is where our bedrooms are." I say and walk upstairs.

"She's the room next to ours so that we're close by if needed." I continue.

"Wonderful idea." She says and writes.

"She'll like this." She gestures to the little nook under the window.

"Group home director said she's been out in the backyard a lot, laying in the grass."

I nod, "Escape from the chaos."

"Exactly." She says.

We walk back downstairs and sit at the kitchen table.

"This is her file, including police reports from the abuse and trafficking. It's pretty um shocking just so that you're aware. It'll be helpful to know what she's gone through."

I sigh and grab the folder, opening it.

I can't help as tears fill my eyes, reading some of the content.

'Per text messages and emails, it's been revealed that the minor aged victim was experiencing sexual assault on a nearly daily basis. The accused perpetrators were taking bids from middle-aged men. In addition, evidence suggests that the minor aged victim experienced physical and emotional trauma if she did not comply and as a way to control her.'

"Holy, oh my god." Serv says and I look up.

"No wonder she's scared of me." He continues.

I squeeze his hand.

"She's on a waitlist for a therapist who specializes in childhood trauma, but I think your private insurance will work faster than our government one." Carrie says.

I wipe my face, "I'll pay it out of my own bank account if I have to."

I close it.

"Well, you passed." She says.

Serv kisses my cheek, "Okay, when can Michaela come."

"Sign these papers and you can go get her from school. I have her things in the car. It's not much."
