I've only been in town for a about a month and only know a few people. I began to see a bit of a feud between the teenagers around town. Apparently there are these "Greasers" and "Socs" (if that's even how you spell it). It's pretty simple, Greasers are lower class and Socs are upper class. I guess I could consider myself a Greaser. My family doesn't have a lot of money, that's mainly the reason we moved here.
I did meet one kid that I really like. His name is Ponyboy, unusual name but I like it. We have second and fourth period together, even though he's a freshman and I'm a sophomore. I'm old for my class, and I guess he's young for his. Apparently he skipped a grade. So Ponyboy is crazy smart. The two of us would sit in the back of class laughing at my stupid jokes. I cracked random jokes and he just laughed because he knew he couldn't do better than me. What? I'm confident and funny.
One day I decided to go to the drive in. I was wanting to meet some new people. I ran into Ponyboy while I was there. He was sitting with two of his friends I guess. One had long, dark, heavily greased hair, and had a frightened look on his face. The other was tall and had no grease in his hair, first one I came across on this side of town that didn't have a bottle of hair grease all over his head. He got up and left, looking like he wanted to make some trouble.
"Hi Ponyboy!" I screamed, but not real loud cause I'd get dirty looks from people.
"Oh hey Anna," he said. "Come with any friends?" He asked kind of looking around.
"Oh no, came here to meet some people I guess," I answered.
"Well, why don't you sit down with us?" He suggested motioning the seat next to him. I sat down. "This is my buddy, Johnny, he's part of our gang."
"Gang?" I said with a small laugh.
"Yeah we're Greasers. You've probably heard that term flying around town."
"Yeah I have a bit I guess."
The tall guy with non-greased hair came back after a short while. He glared at me and smirked. Hey forcefully sat down next me and put his arm around me, grabbing tight in my shoulder. His face got real close.
"This your girlfriend Pone?" He said getting closer.
"No, this is Anna, Dal. Back off of her. She's new in town." Ponyboy responded with a stern voice.
"Oh, new girl I see," he said with a smirk and began to loosen up on my shoulder.
"Yeah, I'm new in town. Mind giving me some space? I can smell your beer breath," I said making a face and leaning the other way. He almost grabbed and jerked me but Ponyboy gave him a stern look again.
"Okay doll, I'll leave you alone for now because you're the "new girl". Alright? But I don't want this kind of talk to happen again you understand?" He almost yelled waiting for a response.
"Yeah," I said calmly and brushing him off of me. He didn't really scare me. I mean, for sure he was scary, but not to me. I felt it was just a "tough guy" act.
"I'm sorry about that," Pony said sincere. "That's Dallas, Dallas Winston. He'll be a name you'll definitely know in the future. But he's cool, trust me. Once you get to know him, he's not all that bad. He just has that tough guy rep to keep."
"Yeah sure whatever, doesn't seem so scary to me," I said. We sat in silence to watch the movie that was getting pretty boring.
