"Hey, Cecelia," Andrew called out, pulling up a chair beside her.
"Hey, Andrew," she replied, looking up from her notebook.
"I just wanted to formally apologize for my roommate's disgusting, intolerable, and inexcusable behavior the other night. I hadn't heard much about it other than from what Jen told me, which is why I'm here. I mean, I heard Brian's version, but I wrote that off as a hunka horseshit," he shook his head. "Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, I'm angry and ashamed of the way you were treated, and I hope my living with Brian doesn't affect our friendship."
"I—," Cecelia began but looked down, unsure of what to say.
"Do you think he's going to show up?" Evie asked, cutting in.
"He's mighty big-headed, but I think after what Christoph did to him, he might be a bit discouraged from showing his face around you. I think he learned his lesson."
"I doubt it," Evie said coldly. "But if he shows, he sure as hell better know not to sit anywhere near you. I'll kill him," she cracked her knuckles menacingly.
"Evie, I don't want to talk about it, let alone think about it. And Andrew, stop," Cecelia looked up at him. "You don't need to apologize for Brian. You're not his keeper. He's my prob—," her voice trailed off as Brian Watterson walked into the room. It felt like the air had been sucked from her lungs. Never before had anyone made her feel so vulnerable and weak. She was disgusted with herself. It didn't matter that his nose was swollen or that he wore black Ray-Bans to cover his bruised eyes. What mattered was that she hadn't done it herself.
He took a seat at the front, nearest to the door.
"Guess he didn't take Christoph's advice after all," Andrew muttered under his breath.
"I can't believe he actually showed," Evie said, covering her mouth too late.
And then, as if on cue, Christoph entered the room. He was dressed in a pair of blue jeans, a beige T-shirt that read "Avada Kedavra Bitch," and a Max Lounge Blazer. And holy shit, did he look pissed.
He didn't say anything. He just took one look at Brian, and Cecelia could've sworn his eyes flashed gold right before he yanked Brian's table away. He stalked up to Brian and, in one swift motion, grabbed him by the shirt with one hand, his bag in the other, and dragged him out of the room and into the hallway.
The room went silent. Everyone was anxious to know what was happening, but too shocked to move. A minute passed, and then they heard footsteps clapping down the hall as if someone were in a hurry. Christoph walked back in and headed straight for them.
"Hey guys," he smiled and waved. "Fancy seeing you all here."
Evie opened her mouth to say something, then closed it, then opened it again but no words came out. She was speechless.
