The ride back to the dormitory was almost unbearable. The awkward silence hung in the air, so palpable you could taste it. Christoph cursed himself for being foolish enough to think he could be happy with her. That fate wouldn't intervene. That she'd never discover the truth.
Such a damn fool.
"Goodbye, Cecelia," he said, opening the car door for her.
He didn't give her a chance to respond. He couldn't bear it. To hear the words from her mouth, that he disgusted her. No, worse, that he scared her. He was around the car, into the driver's seat, and speeding off down the road before she could make a sound.
It was better this way.
Better to rip the Band-Aid off all at once.
He knew what he had to do now. The demons had found her. She wasn't safe. She wouldn't be safe until Azazel was gone.
Tonight, he was going to find that bastard, even if it was the last thing he ever did.

Evette was sitting on her bed, replaying the perfect evening she had with Erik. The flowers, the candlelight, the fried mac and cheese balls—it was like something out of a movie. She still couldn't believe he'd made it all himself.
Her dreamy thoughts were interrupted when Cecelia burst into the room, slamming the door behind her.
"I take it your night didn't go so well?" Evie asked, raising an eyebrow.
"I don't know!" Cecelia shouted in frustration. She paced back and forth before collapsing on her bed, shaking off her pea coat. "It was amazing. Straight out of a fairy tale. No, scratch that. No fairytale prince could compare to him."
"So why the freak-out?" Evie asked, gesturing at Cecelia's frantic state.
"I'll tell you why!" She was pacing again, speaking with dramatic hand gestures. "Our night was magical. He brought me to this art exhibit. It was like I was standing in the middle of outer-fucking-space, and he kissed me." She lashed out with her foot, in an attempt to kick off her heels. "Ooh it was unbelievably perfect! Ugh!" she tripped, falling back against her mattress and then slid to the floor.
Suddenly, reality hit her like a ton of bricks. She burst into tears, burying her face in her hands.
"Why did everything have to turn to shit, Evie?" she whispered, her voice breaking.
Evie got off her bed and sat down next to Cecelia on the floor, wrapping an arm around her friend.
"There, there. It's okay, Cecelia," she said soothingly.
Cecelia sobbed into Evie's shoulder while Evie stroked her hair. "He brought me to the park," Cecelia continued between sobs. "There was an orchestra, he quoted Kerouac, asked me to be his girlfriend... and then he left me."
