Chapter 4: A Change

Emiko loudly yawned as she stumbled out of bed, her feet hitting the soft, plush carpet underneath. Making her way into the bathroom, she did her regular hygiene routine. Changing into her clothes, she made her way downstairs.

"Good morning tou-san!" she brightly greeted her father who was sitting on the table gazing at his tea cup. He merely looked at her with a blank gaze before averting his eyes. Emiko's smile faltered slightly but was back up again. "I-I...guess I'll see you later..." she softly whispered before heading out the door and towards the academy.

Just smile... just keep smiling. It will all get better. She chanted internally before pushing all thoughts about her father away. "Ohayo Emiko!!" she turned to see the lady at the small pastry shop greeting her.

"Ohayo ne, obaa-san!" Emiko grinned before running towards her, "How are you today?"

"I'm doing great child! Did you eat this morning?" she asked making Emiko shake her head, "Oh goodness. You need to eat! Has Sakumo forgotten to give you anything today?"

"Ne... tou-san was just a bit busy," Emiko lied with a smile, "But that's okay!"

"Of course that man will forget," the shop lady's husband came from the back and frowned, "After what he did with his whole mission, even I would be ashamed of eating and facing my children."

Emiko's eyes widened hearing the piercing words from the man that sent her heart to her stomach. The lady's eyes widened before she snapped her head towards her husband, "Are you crazy?! She's just a child! Don't get her involved with anything!" she scolded him.

The man scowled, "She's the child of that disgraceful man! He threw away his mission to save someone's life, and I'm pretty sure this kid," he spat, "Will do the same thing. Such a shame to the shinobi world and a waste of space." The old lady gasped at her husband's cruel words as Emiko's fists clenched unconsciously.

"That's enough," Emiko lowly growled causing the man's eyes to narrow towards her.

"What did you just say?"

"I said... that's enough," Emiko clenched her teeth, "You are in no position of talking shit about my father when you are merely a lowly civilian yourself, old man. You wouldn't even be able to survive yourself if it weren't for shinobi. My father saved his comrade's life because he was precious to him. My father risked the mission because missions will always come and go, but a person's life can never be returned."

The man growled, "Why you little brat—"

"No! You will shut up and listen to me!" Emiko screamed getting attention from the walking villagers, "You talked all and I didn't interrupt. I don't even want to waste my breath on a feeble, vile person such as yourself. And what you said earlier about how I will do the same thing as my father? I won't," she mockingly grinned with a sneer, "If I see you dying on a pathetic road, don't worry, I won't take the effort of saving you. I'll leave you to rot and let the wild animals eat you up. Because my mission will be more important than your pathetic life. I'll just watch you scream and beg for mercy," she whispered as the man's face paled.
