Seven

I wasn't wearing any shoes.

I had dropped my heels somewhere in the bedroom while Ambrose and Silas were rushing around, filling their leather bags with weapons and everything else they needed.

The stone of the hallways was cold underneath my bare feet as the three of us silently made our way from one side of the Blood Moon packhouse to the other.

Ambrose kept pausing every few seconds, his hand gripped tightly in mine as he listened closely for any sound of other wolves.

Silas was pressed so closely against my back that I could feel his body heat and the nerves rolling off him.

I didn't know much about Ambrose's Beta and best friend, but it was clear from the few times we'd spoken that he was beyond loyal and completely devoted to his Alpha. I so badly hoped that he truly liked me and wasn't just hating me in secret.

I tapped Ambrose's left shoulder as we got to a fork in the hallway.

The left path would lead us towards the last flight of servant stairs and down to where the Omegas slept. To where I used to sleep and never would again.

My heart clenched painfully in my chest at the thought that everything was about to change.

"Stop." Silas's voice was rough. "Something's not right."

Nerves pricked at my skin.

"I thought that Gamma Thomas was adamant that she wouldn't come back down here."

"Yeah, well now he's changed his mind. He's positive that she'll want to come down here one last time before she leaves."

Warriors. There were pack warriors. Why were they here? Madam Olympia said that Gamma Thomas would never think to look for me down here.

I held my breath until I was sure that the pack warriors had passed. What now? Where did we go now? How were we going to get out?

"Seven."

I whipped my head around at the whisper of my old name.

Eleven was standing half-hidden in the shadows, her hands gripping the chipped brick wall tightly.

"Over here."

"We can trust her," I told Ambrose and Silas without a second thought. "She won't hurt me."

Ambrose squeezed my hand tightly before hurriedly walking forward.

"This way." Eleven tilted her head to the left, loose strands of hair falling from her bun. "There's a handful of warriors walking up and down the hallways. They've been patrolling for the past half hour. We have to be quick."

Ambrose didn't say anything, but through our mate bond, I could feel his anger rise. His hand tightened around mine, keeping me close.

Why was Eleven helping us? Surely, she knew that if Gamma Thomas found out, she would be punished within an inch of her life.

My lips parted. I had so many questions that I wanted to ask her right now, but instead I bit my tongue and kept moving forward.

Eleven led us down a passage that I had never seen before. The ceiling was low and covered in spider webs. Ambrose—and no doubt Silas—had to keep ducking as we moved forward. The sound of my own nervous breathing filled the underground hallway, and for a moment, I felt like I'd never make it out of this pack house.

"Just a little farther," Eleven mumbled, leading us around another corner. "Gamma Thomas doesn't know about this hallway. It's been closed and bordered up for years. It's not really used for anything but storage."
