Seven
After Jasper had fetched me in the garden, I rushed to Ambrose, sure that whatever he wanted to talk to me about was important. Why else would he send his Gamma to get me?
Why did he need me right now? What was so important?
I was so busy trying to get to my mate on the other side of the packhouse that I wasn't looking at where I was going.
Until I ran straight into another wolf.
"I'm so sorry," I apologized right away, fighting the urge to bow my neck and submit to the wolf in front of me. "I wasn't watching where I was going."
You're not an Omega, I reminded myself. You're not an Omega.
Ambrose is your mate; you can't be an Omega. The Moon Goddess came to you in a dream and told you. You don't need to bow.
"Oh, it's no worries at..."
I looked up and met the she-wolf's light brown eyes as she stopped talking midsentence.
"Oh, you're the"—she looked me up and down, her eyes raking over my baby blue dress—"wolf that Ambrose brought back with him for one of the lesser packs."
Lesser packs? I knew that the Blood Moon pack wasn't nearly as beautiful as the Royal pack, but it was still beautiful in its own way.
"Um," I cleared my throat, doing my best to push down all the nerves I was feeling right now. "I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name?"
It was clear that this she-wolf knew who I was, but I had no clue who she was. I had never seen her before.
Her smile was sickly sweet as she told me. "I'm surprised that Ambrose hasn't talked about me yet, I can't tell you how many times other wolves in the pack have told me that Amby talks their tail off about me. We've known each other for years. I'm Cora."
I had to stop myself from frowning. Ambrose had never talked about or so as much brought up a she-wolf named Cora before.
Did...Did Cora just call him Amby? I had never heard any other wolf call him that before. I had never called him anything else but his name.
Every single she-wolf that I'd seen in the Royal pack was absolutely beautiful. But Cora might be the most beautiful she-wolf I'd seen yet. She had long, strawberry-blonde hair that fell down in soft waves to just above her collarbones, drawing my eyes to the gem-encrusted, gold necklace that was twinkling in the sunshine.
"You like my necklace?" Cora hummed, drawing my eyes back up to hers as she looked at me. "Ambrose gave it to me."
"It's pretty," I managed to push out, my own insecurities swirling around my mind.
How had I never met Cora? How had I never even heard Ambrose bring her up before?
"It's a mix of mine and Ambrose's birthstones," she told me while gently stroking the necklace. "He gave it to me earlier this year. He's always doing sweet things like that. Some days I think that gift-giving is his love language. But then again, Ambrose does love to hold my hand in his, so maybe physical touch is his love language."
My heart slowly dropped to the bottom of my stomach as Cora spoke.
Was...Was Ambrose seeing Cora? Was he seeing her before we met? Was he still seeing her now?
He was busy most days, but I thought it was because he was the Alpha King. Of course, he was busy. But still...
My thoughts were eating at me from the inside out. Cora filled every inch of my mind, just like the way that Gamma Thomas used to do.
