The streets became more crowded and Megi stood out even more from the crowd. It was getting colder, so she put a zip-up sweatshirt over her shoulders. She wore dark glasses over a baseball cap that protected her from the sun all this time, or maybe it was because she simply liked wearing it. She stopped at a store on the way and bought something to eat. While leaving the market, someone suddenly bumped into her. It was a tall, young Japanese man who looked like he was running away from someone. Megi widened her eyes at him.
"What the...!?" She said in English.
The boy looked at her surprised face. "Quick! I have to hide!"
Megi noticed two men pushing through the crowd of people. Without a moment's hesitation, she threw her sweatshirt over the boy, put a hat on his head and gave him dark glasses.
"Come on!" She grabbed his arm and started to walk. They moved towards the approaching men. Squeezing through the crowd, the boy and Megi weren't noticed by the 'pursuit' and passed each other without any suspicions.
"Bad guys?" She asked the boy.
"Let's say family, which I'm fed up with for now" He replied.
'Okey' Megi thought and said. "So, do you have a place to stay or at least some money? Because you look like you ran away in a hurry?"
"Well..." The boy thought for a moment. "Well, I don't have it... Will you help me?" He asked without thinking.
"Why not. The trip will be more interesting" Megi replied confidently, which made the boy nervous. He didn't expect to meet someone like her.
"But don't take off my sweatshirt until we get back to the hotel, okay?"
The boy just nodded and didn't speak again. He silently followed the unknown foreign woman who helped him get out of trouble. When they got off the metro, they went towards the hotel, but on the way Megi went into a store.
"Come on" She said. "We have to buy something to eat and whatever else you need, right?"
"But I don't have any money" The boy replied quietly.
"Don't worry" She put her hand on his shoulder. "I saved the money so that I wouldn't miss anything" She smiled slightly.
After doing the necessary shopping, they went to the hotel where Megi was currently staying. After a short conversation with the woman at the reception, she took the boy to her room. There were plenty of judgmental looks that said, 'She's barely arrived and she's already found herself a boyfriend' but Megi didn't care. A moment later, the same woman appeared with a new futon. Megi thanked her and turned to the boy.
"Well, you can stay here with me tonight. Tomorrow you will think about what you will do next. For now, go take a bath and I'll set up the futon for you" -The boy took the things he needed and headed towards the bathroom. He stopped in front of her door.
"I didn't know you could speak Japanese"
"When I have no choice, I can. I need to know the basics. By the way, my name is Megi" She said, arranging the quilt.
"Reiji" The boy replied, entering the bathroom.
'Is there something more interesting waiting for me than sightseeing?' Thinking so, Megi took a bento bought in a store and asked the owner to warm it up. When she returned to the room, the boy had already left the bathroom and was sitting on his knees at the table. Megi placed the heated food in front of him. "Today we have only this, but tomorrow if you decide to stay here, there will be something better"
"Itadakimasu" Reiji said and started eating. "If it's not a problem, I'd rather stay. Unless, of course, you are some kind of murderer and the owner is your partner in crime" He said with a hint of suspicion.
"No, not really. Are you?" She gave him the same look. The boy shook his head.
"Well, that's fine. You can stay. But you must know that I came for sightseeing, so I'm also going to go to the city tomorrow. Of course, to another place, so there shouldn't be any problems with your family, right?" She asked, but there was no answer. They ate the rest of the meal in silence.
"Okay, I'm going to take a bath"
When there was no answer, Megi looked over her shoulder at the boy and said with a smile.
"Don't peek"
The boy blushed. "What are you talking about?" he muttered. He threw the blanket over his head and went to sleep. Megi, amused by her own words, went to take a bath and then went to sleep. The second day of her stay in Japan turned out to be more interesting than Megi could have expected. She didn't know if what she did was right, but making decisions on the spur of the moment somehow always worked out for her. That's why she trusted her intuition that the boy would not be a threat to her.
