The hour had finally come.
When Theodore came out from that office with William, his whole mood had changed. Nia didn't know if it was for better or for worse.
"Theo," she called. He immediately looked up, meeting her eyes. "Are you okay?" she asked.
He gave her a weak smile before leaning forward to grab her hand. "I'm more than okay, darling,"
She smiled, and they both leaned in to kiss, which was soft and sweet before a knock interrupted them.
William.
"It's time to go,"
And with that, they said their goodbyes. Nia stayed with Theodore's sister, who, like Nia, was afraid to be in the public eye.
Immediately as the door locked, Nia felt an arm go over her shoulder. She turned to see Jess smiling, tears in her eyes. "I guess it's just you and me."
Nia smiled back. "I guess so," she replied, giving Jess's hand a reassuring squeeze.
The pair, having been left to watch the inauguration together, were left with a card to order room service. While Jess ordered room service, Nia sat down and got comfortable until Jess flopped down beside her, turning on the big flat-screen television.
"Is it okay if I ask you a question?" Jess asked, turning to Nia.
Nia nodded for her to go ahead.
"Do you really love my brother?"
A smile played out on her lips at that question from Jess. "I do, I do, I really do."
Jess smiled at that answer. "Good, because I wasn't going to give you up so quickly anyway," she said, and Nia chuckled.
"I hope not," Nia whispered, and they went back to watching the television for the duration of the inauguration. Jess would talk, and Nia would listen to her very excited sister-in-law.
Their eyes were glued to the television, eventually snacks and food surrounded them with a blanket barely covering them both. The warmth of the blanket and the closeness of Jess's presence made the whole experience feel cozy and intimate.
As they watched, Jess occasionally made comments about the ceremony, pointing out various dignitaries and sharing little stories about growing up with Theodore. Nia loved hearing these snippets of his life, each one making her feel closer to him. Jess’s excitement was contagious, and Nia found herself laughing at some of the more lighthearted moments.
Every now and then, they’d reach for the snacks, sharing a bowl of popcorn and some chocolate-covered pretzels. The television cast a soft glow over the room, making it feel even more like a scene from a perfect evening.
