The sound of giggling caused them to separate, and there stood his sister with a camera in her hand, a surprised expression on her face. "Oops." Nia buried her face in his chest, a smile on her lips. "Jess, what are you doing?"
"Mom said she needed a picture of you two together for her book," she quickly explained. Theodore chuckled, still holding Nia close. "Well, I guess we gave her what she wanted. You can go now," he said.
"Okay fine, you both can keep attacking eachothers faces like zombies. " Theodore couldn't help but chuckle, as he watched as she left.
He also could not help but notice the audible sigh of relief that escaped Nia's lips.
"For a moment, I thought it was the press spying on us," She says, as she lets go of him. Now he could see the look of relief on her face, which made him feel a pang of sadness. "Would that be so terrible?"
Nia was sort of surprised by his question. "Theo, you know what I said years ago."
"I remember what you said, but you also said 'someday.' Someday you'll marry me, be my partner, and the mother of my children. You said someday, so why can't someday be now?"
She remembered her exact words from that night, and once again, guilt began to consume her.
"If I were to become president, would you be interested in being my first lady?" he asked unexpectedly, as she lay on his chest, his arm securely wrapped around her waist. Nia lifted her head, a chuckle escaping her lips as she found his question amusing, although deep down she knew it held a certain weight.
"Are you asking for my hand in marriage, Theodore Roosevelt Rae Knocks?" Nia inquired, her voice laced with a hint of playfulness.
Theodore's arms tightened around her waist upon hearing his full name roll off her tongue. He was accustomed to being called Theo. "If that's what you want to call it, then yes," he replied, his grip on her growing firmer.
"Ask me that again someday," Nia suggested, her voice filled with a mixture of hope and uncertainty.
"In three years," Theodore proposed, attempting to negotiate the timeline.
"Someday," Nia responded, leaving the possibility open without committing to a specific timeframe.
"Four years. It has to be sooner," Theodore insisted, his determination evident.
"Only time will tell, Theo," Nia replied, acknowledging the uncertainty of the future.
"Five years," he finally settled, causing Nia's heart to sink as she turned to face him. She realized he was genuinely serious about this, and she couldn't help but feel guilty because she knew their time together was drawing to a close. "I can only promise you 'someday,' Theo," she confessed, her voice tinged with regret.
