today was the last day yu nishinoya had... to make y/n l/n his friend.
tanaka had reminded him about it, and he cursed at himself for forgetting about the bet.
he technically had until 12 am to complete the bet, so he still had a few more hours left. he could do this. all he had to do was get y/n to say that they were friends and everything would be over and done with.
as the final bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, rain began to fall outside. y/n glanced out the window, a sinking feeling settling in his chest. he hadn't brought an umbrella today.
he sighed and started walking to the front of the school, clutching his bag close to him as he readied himself to get soaked as soon as he stepped out from under the shelter of the school.
just as he was about to take a step foot out, a familiar voice stopped him.
"you're not actually going to walk in the rain, are you?"
y/n stopped and turned toward nishinoya, who was holding a deep blue colored umbrella with white stars plastered across it. he was staring at y/n with an amused smile.
"i don't have an umbrella." y/n mumbled. he didn't have an umbrella, so of course he was going to walk in the rain.
what else was there to do?
"well, we'll just share mine." nishinoya said, opening the umbrella up with a faint click and putting it above them. "lead the way."
or... that's an option.
as they walked, the sound of rain on the umbrella created a soothing backdrop. y/n glanced at nishinoya, and noticed a small patch of water embedding itself on his unprotected shoulder.
y/n tried to to gently take the umbrella out of nishinoya's grasp, but nishinoya carefully moved it out of his reach, but not too much to where y/n got hit with the rain.
y/n faltered, a strange warmth spreading through his body despite the cold and gloomy weather. he hugged himself, looking at the ground as each step he took emitted a low sound.
"um," y/n said after a while, breaking the silence.
nishinoya snapped his head over to him, eyes wide. y/n never started conversation, this was a moment in history!
y/n stopped abruptly, making nishinoya skid to a stop and continue holding the umbrella over y/n's head as he waited for him to continue.
y/n's body was shaking, so he hugged himself tighter, shifting his weight from one foot to the other.
"uh, i..."
why were words so hard to form? he felt like he was about to pass out at any given moment.
nishinoya leaned in.
"i... i wanted to say..."
y/n looked up at him.
"thank you."
nishinoya blinked, his eyes widening. his heart picked up a pace after skipping a couple beats, his face warming as he found himself struggling to form a sentence. "for what?"
y/n glanced away. "for talking to me." he said. "for... seeing me. you didn't make me feel lonely."
nishinoya got a little flustered, but, then felt a little bad.
"you don't have to thank me. i..."
think of a lie... think!
"i-i saw you a couple times around, and i wanted to hear who you were... from you."
"who i am?"
"... yes. and, if it's okay, i would still like to know more about you." nishinoya cleared his throat a little. this would be the appropriate time to ask, right? "so, can we officially be friends?"
and for the first time since meeting him, nishinoya saw y/n crack a smile, and his heart melted.
"yeah."
