lunch was y/n's least favorite time of the day.
it made him think and it smelled like food. he hated thinking and he hated food.
he sat slumped at his desk in class, his arms folded under his head serving as a makeshift pillow. his mind was heavy and he just wanted to go home.
suddenly, a voice pierced through the haze of his thoughts. "are you y/n?"
y/n stiffened, lifting his body hesitantly and crossing his arms. he turned his head slightly to see who was addressing him.
it was a girl, with very familiar eyes and long brown hair. she had a serious expression, her gaze fixed on him expectantly.
he looked away, furrowing his brows.
"yeah." he replied quietly."oh, good." she breathed out. "i already went into three other classrooms. i'm reina," she introduced herself. "yu's older sister. he told me what happened."
y/n's heart sank at the mention of nishinoya's name.
"if you're trying to defend him, i don't want to hear it."
"complete opposite, actually." she said. "i'm not here to defend him or make excuses. what he did was wrong. he knows it."
y/n looked at her skeptically, unsure of what to make of this unexpected conversation. "then why are you here?"
"because i wanted to apologize on his behalf. he messed up. badly. and i'm sorry that you got hurt because of it."
"apologizing won't change anything," he muttered.
"you're right," she acknowledged. "my brother... is impulsive and sometimes doesn't think before he acts. and i know i just said i wasn't defending him, but he does care, even if he doesn't always show it the right way."
y/n froze, then uncrossed his arms. "he what?"
"he cares. i talked to him again and... y/n he really does love you. he's been beating himself over this for a while now."
there was a lump in his throat. "love?"
"yeah."
y/n stared at reina, disbelief etched on his face. the idea that nishinoya might actually care, let alone love him, felt like a cruel joke after everything that had happened.
he shook his head, feeling a mix of emotions swirling inside him. pain, anger, and, a small spark of hope that he did not want to feel. "how do i know he didn't pay you to say this?"
reina sighed. "i can't blame you for feeling that way, but i wouldn't come here even if he did pay me. don't tell him i said this, but he's kinda broke already."
y/n looked away. "i don't know," he said, his voice wavering. "i trusted him once, and look where it got me."
reina stepped forward and patted his shoulder. "take your time."
with that, she turned and walked away, leaving y/n to think about what she had just said.
nishinoya loving him?
she has to be lying.
that couldn't be true.
"-paying me money to make y/n my friend, well i became his first! then you pay me more to make him fall for me? and looks like i won that one too because now we're boyfriends! ugh i can't take it anymore!! i have no idea when it didn't start to feel like a b-"
y/n brought his uniform collar over the lower half of his face.

nishinoya sat alone in the locker room after practice, his head in his hands. he had been off his game, everyone's noticed, but they didn't know how to approach it.
the door creaked open, and suga walked in, his face set in a serious expression. he was already changed, just had been waiting for everyone to filter out so he could talk to nishinoya alone
"hey," suga began, "i think it's time we talk."
nishinoya looked up, his eyes tired. he shook his head. "suga, no, i'm not in the mood for a lecture."
"i'm not here to lecture you," suga said, taking a seat next to him. "i can leave that to daichi. i'm here to talk to you as a friend."
nishinoya swallowed hard and looked away.
"i've seen how you've been struggling lately. the way you've been playing, the way you've been acting... and i think it's safe to say it's about l/n?"
nishinoya's shoulders slumped, answering suga's question.
"noya. if you really care about l/n, if you truly value what you had with him, then you need to let him go."
nishinoya felt his whole world crumble. his eyes widened in shock as he turned toward suga. "what are you talking about?"
"you made a mistake. you used him for a bet, and now he's hurting, you're hurting. the best thing you can do for you two right now is to step back and leave him alone."
"but i-i don't want to lose him, i was just giving him space before i try talking to him again."
"he said that he wanted no contact, didn't he? he needs to heal, and he can't do that with you around."
"but-"
"no. i understand that you care about him. and the fact that you're struggling with this shows that you do. but sometimes, the most selfless thing you can do is let go, even if it means it's the hardest thing you'll ever do."
nishinoya hated how he had a point.
