I remember always seeing the sun shine every morning when I woke up. I would look out my second story window. And there it was, lighting up good ol' Oakland, California.
But then everything changed when they came.
Nobody knew who they were or where they came from. They weren't even human. Some sort of alien, we thought.
The aliens did horrible things. They took my parents but forgot my brother, sister and I. I was 16 and Violet was 15. My brother, Ethan, was 18.
The aliens tore families apart. Screams ripped through the streets as mothers and fathers were seperated from their children. It lasted a week. We ran far away, to a barn on the outskirts of town that the aliens missed.
And we've stayed there with three other girls: Caidan, Ronnie and Lily-Rose. Together, we've lived out the "war".
That was almost 4 years ago.
Oakland has changed. The aliens took over. They brainwashed all the people into thinking that everything is perfect and just the way it should be. They all wear white and are not allowed to leave they city. Once a month, they must all go in to be brainwashed again, just to revive the old one.
If they don't, then the people will remember everything from before the dark times. The aliens feed off the life forces of all the people. It keeps them weak and reinforces the power of the brainwashing.
But not us. We've survived. The six of us barely scratch by but we live. By day, we stay inside the barn, so no one finds us. At night, we sneak into the city to gather food and other necessities. It's not ideal but it has kept us alive for four long years. Four long, painful, lonely years
