"Ethan!" I hissed over at my brown-haired older brother. "Ethan! Get off your ass!" Ethan rolled over and off of the hay stack he called a bed.
"Where's the fire bitch?" He groaned from the dirt floor. Could he be any lazier in the night? Yep. I said night. We steal by nightfall and hide during the day.
"C'mon. It's dusk. Let's gooooo!" I grabbed my shotgun off the wall along with my knife. "Move it you bastard, let's go!" "Alright alright. Pass me my gun, Kellin." I tossed Ethan his gun. Get it yourself you fucker, ugh. I'm your sister, not your slave.
Ethan pulled on his old brown boots and his dusty black leather jacket. He looked like a cowboy. But we gotta wear what we can get. So if that means ratty old clothes, then so be it. I grabbed my sneakers. An old pair of Vans from the abandoned mall. All the stores were still there so that's been our main target for a while.
Together, we crawled out of the barn quietly. "Are the lights out?" He asked. I nodded. Once the street lights were out, people weren't allowed to be outside of their homes. This worked to our advantage. We snuck into the mall at night to get supplies.
Two blocks, a gunshot and a dead squirrel later, Ethan and I had made it to the mall. "Split up and then meet by Kohl's okay?" Ethan whispered. I nodded in agreement. "Let's do this."
With a knife in hand and my shotgun strapped to my back, we were a killer duo. Like Batman and Robin. We argued over who was Batman but clearly, it was me. I was faster.
I broke off the lock at Zumiez. Grabbing 3 jackets, some hats and a pair of shoes, I ran out clickly. Heading towards Kohl's, I saw a flitting shadow. "Who's there?" I called out quietly.
A bright light shone out, blinding me for a second. I dropped the clothes and grabbed my shotgun, loaded it and prepared to pull the trigger. "Hello?" I whispered. I had no time to be scared. Ethan's one rule was "Shoot first. Ask questions later." I'd say he's been watching too many cop shows again.
My finger gently squeezed the trigger. "Dude. Chill. It's just me." A soft voice came out from the darkness. It was just Violet. I sighed in exasperation. "Shit man, you scared the fuck outta me. What are you doing here? I could've shot you, ya know that?!"
"Yeah yeah. I know." Violet said with attitude. 'Scuze you, Miss Sassypants. I almost shot your head off. My sister could be so frustrating sometimes. "C'mon Vi. Ethan waiting at Kohl's, let's go." I picked up the clothes and continued walking.
We walked quickly to the department store. None of the lights were on. This mall used to be the highlight of Oakland. Now it was nothing but another wasted building. I sighed. I remember coming here with my friends and Violet. We'd go through Hot Topic, the Exclusive Company, Zumiez and the Disney store. It was sad, thinking back on it now.
At last, we reached Kohl's where Ethan was leaning against the barrister, sharpening his sword. "Kellin, who's that?" His eyes narrowed at Violet. "Violet, stupid." I groaned. "No. It's not."
I turned to face Violet. But she was no longer there. In her place, stood an alien.
"KELLIN!!! SHOOT IT!! QUICK!!" Ethan screamed. I grabbed my shotgun once more and shot the alien right in it's disgusting eye. Eww. "Nasty...look at it's blood. It's orange. Dude. I'm gonna barf." I mumbled. "Bottle it." Ethan demanded. "The blood? Hell naw. You do it." I answered.
"Wuss." Ethan muttered under his breath. "I heard that!" I walked through Kohl's to the exit of the mall. Ethan jogged to catch up. He examined the orange substance in the vial. "Why did you bottle it up?" I asked Ethan to which he replied, "If you get alien blood on something, it dissovles. The blood is like an acid, but stronger. So be careful with it."
"Careful is my middle name!" I said proudly. "No it's not sis. It's Elizabeth." I punched him in the arm playfully and gathered my clothes up once again and we left the mall.
