y/n was avoiding him.
that was expected.
in the hallways.
nishinoya would spot y/n in the crowd of people, and y/n would catch his eyes too. nishinoya saw how tired they look, darkened in color and dark circles.
y/n quickly turned to leave.
"y/n, wait,"
he glanced over his shoulder, his expression unreadable. his pace only quickened and soon, he was out of sight.
in the library.
nishinoya entered the library, not even trying to find y/n today.
he didn't like reading, but he thought a change of scenery would be nice. as he wandered through the aisles, he caught sight of y/n sitting at a table, engrossed in a book.
his heart pounded and he frowned warily. he started to approach him cautiously, trying not to startle him. "hey... can we-"
y/n's head snapped up and shut his book with a loud slam, his eyes locking with nishinoya's for a split second before he stood up and walked away, leaving his book behind.
after school.
after a couple more days since his last attempt, he thought for sure y/n would at least hear him out. so, he waited at the school gates, rocking his body back and forth.
he was bound to get an earful from daichi for being late, he was sure, but he didn't care.
y/n came out from the front of the school and was heading towards the school gates, his steps hurried and tense.
nishinoya gasped and jogged to catch up, calling out to him. "y/n, wait up!"
y/n paused for a brief moment, his shoulders tensing as if he were going to turn around. but then, he shook his head and continued walking.
nishinoya stopped in his tracks, watching helplessly as y/n walked away. "... i'm sorry," he whispered to himself.

y/n lay on his bed, staring at his phone.
no one
y/n can we talk tomorrow?
plz i'm so sorry, it really isn't what it seems to be! just let me talk to you and i'll explain.
hello? y/n please.
he doesn't know why he hadn't blocked nishinoya. he's gotten other messages and miscalls from him. but he never bothered to block him.
the messages and notifications blurred together as he scrolled aimlessly. he barely noticed when his mom knocked on the door and peeked her head inside.
"dinner's ready, babe," she said gently.
y/n look up. "i'm not hungry," he mumbled, continuing to scroll through his phone.
his mom's expression shifted from mild concern to deep worry. she walked over to the bed and sat down on the edge, reaching out to touch his arm. "you've hardly eaten anything today. you need to eat something."
he shrugged off her hand. "i'm fine, mom."
she wasn't convinced. she recognized the signs all too well, the same ones she had seen before. "skipping meals isn't going to help. you were doing so well. remember what the doctor said about keeping a regular eating schedule?"
"i just don't feel like eating."
"... is this about..?"
y/n clutched his phone in his hand, his lips starting to tremble. "mom, please."
"i'm right, aren't i? y/n, i've had friends lie to me in the past-"
"that isn't the same!" y/n shouted, sitting up and looking his mom in the eye. "it isn't the same. you weren't a freak that no one wanted to be around. you had friends and you had dad and people actually liked you. nishinoya was my only friend, i really thought he wanted to be around me but no! then he... kissed me."
his mom's eyes widened. y/n swallowed and ducked his head back down.
"he kissed me and said we were something when that wasn't... true."
tears welled up in his eyes, but he quickly rubbed them away. "h-he was the only person who never made me feel like i wasn't alone, mom. and now i find out it was all a lie. h-how am i supposed to deal with that?"
after getting over her initial shock of being informed nishinoya kissed y/n, she slowly reached out, gently taking his hand in hers. "i... know it feels like the end of the world right now, but it's not, baby. you have me, and i know dad is watching over you day and night. you'll find people who truly care about you. nishinoya's actions don't define your worth."
"but it hurts so much. i won't trust anyone again."
"no, no, don't say that." she said, caressing his face. "it's going to take time, but everyone isn't so bad. healing isn't something that happens overnight."
y/n let out a deep breath and collapsed back into his bed, shaking his head against his pillow. "i wish i could back in time... and never have met him."
and for once, his mom didn't know what to say. she just stared at her son, rubbing her hand up and down his arm.

nishinoya sat on the sand, staring out at the vast expanse of the ocean. the waves rolled in rhythmically, crashing against the shore with a soothing, constant hum.
the sun was beginning to set, casting an orange and pink glow across the water, and the salty sea breeze ruffled his hair as he took a deep breath and closed his eyes.
but all he thought when he closed his eyes was the the look on y/n's face, the pain and betrayal in his eyes.
his own snapped opened, his breath stuttering.
that was his worst fear. seeing y/n look like that.
his fingers dug into the sand, grasping a seashell. he turned it over in his hands, feeling the smooth and cool surface.
he hesitated, feeling a lump form in his throat. slowly, he lifted the seashell to his ear, closing his eyes. he focused on the sound of the ocean, trying to drown out the noise in his head.
he thought about y/n, about all the moments they had shared, the laughter, the stolen glances, the times they had spent together before everything fell apart.
at first, he heard nothing but the rush of the waves. but as he concentrated harder, he imagined y/n's voice, soft and gentle, speaking to him.
the sound was faint, almost like a whisper carried by the wind. it wasn't real, he knew that, but it felt so vivid, so real in that moment.
his shoulders shook as the tears began to fall, his grip on the seashell tightening. he buried his face in his hands, the seashell still pressed against his ear.
the sounds of the beach seemed to fade away, replaced by the pounding of his heart and the echo of his sobs.
he missed y/n so much, but he knew it was all his fault.
