Xiao Zhan arrived at the palace garden where he was supposed to meet Wang Ybio, however, the alpha was nowhere in sight, rather, the fourth prince, Chaoxing, was lying there on the soft green with a book held up over his head, reading.

Sensing his presence, the beta prince bolted to a sitting-up position with his legs folded. He blinked up at the omega as he immediately got up to his feet, then bowed. “Your Highness,”

“I’m just an omega consort; you don’t have to bow to me, Prince Chaoxing.” the omega prince retorted.

The fourth prince looked at him with a smile that was too big for his face as well as his glasses. "You might be an omega consort, but you have earned my respect; you have accomplished a great deal."

Xiao Zhan tilted his head and peered at the younger prince with interest. “Have you ever thought of being a king, Prince Chaoxing?”

The fourth prince's mouth sprang open in horror at the question. “Isn't that question a little too blunt?”

“Is it?” Xiao Zhan reflected out loud—he had always been direct with his words, perhaps a bit too direct but some things couldn't be helped. “I apologize. I will return inside,” he said, turning to leave.

“Wait. Didn't you come here for something? If my hunch is true, you will meet Wang Yibo. It would be a shame if he came and did not find you here. I recommend you stay.

Xiao Zhan paused, then turned back around. He hugged his arms around himself, noting that the fourth prince was biting his lips nervously. “Do I unnerve you?” he asked out of the blue and the prince jerked, startled.

He gave a tense laugh and scratched the back of his neck. "You unnerve everyone, and right now you have asked me if I have ever considered being king. No one has ever asked me that before because everyone knows that, despite my candidacy, I have no chance against Tyler, Zuriel, and Wang Yibo."

Xiao Zhan inclined his head inquisitively. “I’m asking you now, have you ever thought of becoming king?”

ChaoXing looked at the omega like a fish out of the water as his mouth opened and closed. He searched for the right answer to the question but he couldn't find it. He sighed,  his chin lowering. "It is irrelevant what I think. I will never be king. I am only a nerdy beta; Father does not want me to become king, and neither do the people. But...” he brightened. "I enjoy books; that is sufficient for me. Ruling a kingdom is difficult; I will leave that to my older brothers, who can undoubtedly do better than me."

Xiao Zhan could have smiled if he knew how to and he would have certainly reached out to ruffle the boy’s hair. “I like books too.” He was not trying, yet his voice came out as monotonous. “They are like a window to another world that only exists in our minds.”

Chaoxing beamed. “I think so too. I have a lot of books, what kind do you like to read?" he exclaimed, practically bouncing.

"Have I kept you waiting?"

Wang Yibo abruptly pants over, clutching a heavy basket of items. He looked between his omega and Chaoxing when he came to a stop. “Did I interrupt something?”

Choaxing shook his head and then looked back at Xiao Zhan. “Can I come to find you later?”

Xiao Zhan nodded softly and Chaoxing leaped in joy before sprinting out of the palace garden. The omega turned to his alpha, then his eyes dropped to the basket in his hold. “What do you have there, my lord?”
