Inside the CEO's cabin, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of expensive coffee and wood polish. Mahi stood near the large mahogany desk, looking through the final onboarding papers.
"Veer, the new join is here and she looks promising," Mahi said, genuinely praising the girl she had interviewed.
Veer didn't look up, his fingers flying across his laptop keyboard as he finalized a report. "Cool! Just call her here. I'll meet her too," he said casually.
"Sure, gimme a minute." Mahi stepped out, called Aashi over, and asked her to head into the CEO's cabin for her formal introduction.
Aashi's POV
I took a deep breath, smoothing out my new shirt. This was it—the moment I'd meet the legendary Veer Maheshwari. I walked to the heavy double doors and gave a soft knock.
"Come in," a firm, deep voice called out from inside.
I pushed the door open and stepped onto the plush carpet. The man was sitting behind a massive desk, his head bent low as he worked intently on his laptop. He didn't look up immediately, giving me a second to take in my surroundings.
But then, I looked at his face.
My heart did a violent somersault. My eyes widened to the size of saucers and my mouth fell open. It felt like I had just been hit by a 440-volt electric shock.
It was him. The arrogant man from the coffee shop. The one I called a 'Dumbo' in front of the whole street.
Panic seized me. Before he could raise his head, I instinctively slammed the file I was holding against my face to cover myself and whipped around, turning my back to him.
"What the hell is he doing here?!" I screamed internally, my mind racing a thousand miles an hour. "Don't tell me that he's my boss. No, no, no... it can't be true! It's a total disaster. Am I really going to be fired on my very first day?" I stood there, trembling, mumbling incoherent prayers under my breath while crying internally.
Veer's POV
I finished the last sentence of my email and clicked 'Send.' I realized the room had gone quiet, but the person who walked in hadn't said a word of greeting.
I shifted my gaze from the laptop screen to the figure standing in the middle of my office. My eyebrows knitted together in confusion. Instead of a professional greeting, I was looking at the back of a girl who seemed to be hiding behind a blue folder.
"Excuse me, Miss...?"
Aashi's POV
"Yes, so Miss Malhotra... as a human being, you would like to talk with a person rather than the door. Am I wrong? So instead of facing the door, turn around."
His voice was like cold iron—firm, deep, and carrying a natural command that made my legs want to give out. My heart was thumping against my ribs like a trapped bird.
I turned back slowly, but I kept the file glued to my face. I was sweating under the collar of my new shirt, desperately praying to almost every god in existence. Please, please let him have forgotten. Let him think I'm just a random clumsy girl from the street.
"Miss Malhotra, remove the freaking file from your face. I need to talk to you," he said, his tone sharpening with frustration.
"Sirrrr.... Actually.... Actually, sir..." I squeaked, my brain working overtime to find an escape. "I have a lot of... pimples on my face today! Yes, a sudden breakout! I'm so embarrassed to show my face to you. But I'm fine like this, really. You can ask me whatever you want to ask me!"
