A distant sound of monitors beeping awakens your senses. The aches of sore muscles course through you as you slowly regain consciousness.
You take in a deep breath, the movement restricted by a tightness around your ribs. You fight against the heaviness of your eyelids, forcing them to flutter open. You're met with a textured ceiling, the rising sun casting shadows along the walls from behind closed blinds. The bright screen at your side monitoring your heart rate, blood pressure, and other vitals draws your attention. You turn to face the display and can't help but watch the steady green lines spike with every beat of your heart.
You're in the hospital.
Other than the tender muscles screaming at every little movement you attempt to make, you are not sure why. You scramble to remember a single thing leading to your admission to the hospital but to no avail. Your heart sinks as a heavy pressure builds in your chest. Your breath comes short as you fight to remember something. Anything.
A soft mumble takes you out of a panic.
You turn your head slowly, careful not to move too quickly and worsen the pain forming between your temples. Your eyes focus on the source of the sound and your heart forgets how to function.
A familiar face rests his head only inches away from you. He's sitting in a chair that looks as comfortable as a rock with his strong arms folded under his messy blonde hair as he sleeps soundly with his head on the edge of your bed. His face is turned towards you and you gaze over his soft features. His usually snarling lips are slightly parted in a deep sleep and his blazing eyes are shut. Bandages decorate his arms and face and you notice the purple hue beneath his thick blonde lashes.
'What happened?'
You make to reach out towards Bakugou's sleeping figure but your arm fails to move. He's only a few inches from you but your body refuses.
You try to call out for him. Your voice barely above a whisper. You swallow hoping to ease the dryness in your throat. You try again. This time your voice comes out raspy but audible.
"Bakugou."
He's awake in an instant.
As if he'd been waiting an eternity for you to wake.
He sits up straight as his eyes take you in. They roam over every inch, examining you with a concerned eagerness you've never seen in his eyes before.
You offer him a weak smile, "I'm alright."
His gaze drifts from scanning for any signs of pain and locks with yours. His eyes lack the usual blazing heat of a dangerous fire. Instead they hold a warm gentle flame. A fire to keep you warm and safe from the cold cruelty of the world.
"What happened?"
Bakugou stirs. His eyes widen. As quickly as he'd woken up from the sound of your voice, he bolts out the door of your hospital room, leaving a cold chill in his wake. No fire to keep you warm.
He leaves you infinitely more confused than you had been upon waking up attached to an IV in a hospital unfamiliar to you.
'Answers. I need answers.'
It's summer.
And you were at the pool with your friends just a few memories ago. You sit in a bus, cringing at the absolute horrors coming from Bakugou's mouth as he tries to answer your mock press questions. A quiet Bakugou listening to your tales of planets and Gods under the thick blanket of night, the glow of stars and the moon reflecting off of the gentle ripples of the nearby pond. Sharing a moment with the boy at dusk, you just about to turn in for the night and him getting an early start to his day. Telling him and truly believing that there is no doubt in your mind that he will be the number one hero someday. Eating dinner with all your friends at camp as they fill your brain with a terrifying story of the woods that surround you. You and Midoriya rambling on about all the effects horror movies have on you as you wait for your turn to embark on the test of courage. The smell of smoke.
