****ASH****
A Week Later
Micah sleeps soundly in the crib next to us, and Sage sleeps soundly curled up in my arms. Getting used to being up on and off with Micah has been a lot for Sage to get used to. She keeps telling me that with all of my support, that it is a lot easier than it could be.
I couldn't imagine someone not doing everything they can for the woman who produced their kids. She pushed Micah out of her for god sakes, so I will do everything I can to make sure she heals properly.
Lying here staring at her, wishing I could sleep like she could. Last week when that nightmare first occurred, I thought that was the last I had seen of it. Now it happens every night, and I wake up in fear.
Being with Sage and Micah helps keep the fear at bay, especially when I first told Sage. She seemed to notice exactly how I was feeling, and helped push it away. Sage is always doing that, it's her instinct to help someone. Now she is the best mom in the world to our son, Micah.
Sage rolls over burying her face in my chest, letting out a sigh she does when she is deep asleep. Tracing my fingers around her face, even though I have memorized every inch of her.
Her hand travels up my chest landing on my heart, and then something comes over me and I drift back to sleep. Holding this woman with my heart in her hands close to me, and praying it never goes away.
I stir as Micah starts to cry and I feel Sage let out a sigh, kissing her forehead, "Take a minute babe. I will get him changed and grab your water. Then I will be back with him so you can feed him."
Sage reaches up, giving me a soft kiss, that leaves a tingle, "Thank you."
As I get up and grab Micah, Sage snuggles into her pillow for a few more minutes. Micah calms down as I rub his back heading to the nursery. Laying Micah down on the changing table he cries a bit, with that hungry cry that we have learned.
With Micah changed, he settles down in my arms as we head to the kitchen. Making Sage her water bottle, and grabbing her nursing pillow. With my hands full, I head back towards the bedroom where Sage got herself comfortable to nurse Micah.
As Sage nurses Micah, I head towards the kitchen to make some breakfast. My phone dings and I pull it out, a text from Tryston, Call me.
I sigh, hoping that this isn't something about work, hoping that the guys listened to Tryston since I left him in charge of the work site.
Warming up the stove, I call Tryston.
Tryston: Hey man, sorry to bother you.
Me: No you're good, just up early with the baby. What's up?
Tryston sighs into the phone: Well, let's just say that the work guys completely screwed up the construction, on the one day I took off early. Now the owners are threatening and I am trying to deescalate the situation. The only problem is they don't wanna talk to me, they wanna talk to you.
I sigh running my hand over my face, this is not what I needed today. However, if the company loses this customer, my paycheck could go goodbye.
Me: Okay, let them know that later after lunch I will contact them and meet up with them.
Tryston: I'm sorry man, I really tried.
Me: No, it's not your fault.
Tryston: I will keep you updated and I will let the owners know. Sorry man.
Hanging up the phone, and sighing as I lean against the counter. I place a text in to Summer about what's going on asking if she can come over around lunch.
Making some french toast and putting it together on a tray with Sage's favorite strawberries. Heading back upstairs, Sage is watching one of her favorite TV show's as Micah is falling back to sleep on her lap.
I set her breakfast in bed next to her, "I can take Micah, if you would like to eat some food baby."
Sage looks up at me with tears in her eyes, "Why are you so amazing?"
Planting a kiss on her forehead, "I just want to make sure that you're taken care of."
She smiles and hands Micah over to me, and puts the tray in her lap. Sitting next to her as Micah sleeps on my chest, and I look over at her as she digs into her food.
This woman is like my world and everything in it. The other day when she was upstairs I was talking to Summer about when we will get married. That I hope to be able to give her and Micah the vacation of their dreams.
Micah coos in my arms and I look down and his eyes open up, just like his mom his eyes give off this energy of calming. I can't wait to be the dad he needs me tobe as he grows up, and hopefully one day give him a sibling.
Sage hums in a delighted mood, "You are the most amazing Dad and fiance, we are so blessed. I heard you on the phone downstairs earlier, everything ok?"
Sighing and looking at the tv, "Unfortunately, the workers at the construction site messed up a part of the construction. So the owners don't agree with having to talk to Tryston, so they want me to come in and talk with them."
She puts a hand on my knee and squeezes it lightly, "Babe, it's okay if you need to run into work for a minute. You are the main one making money right now and this is important."
Looking into her eyes, "I am just scared of something happening. We are both still learning as parents, and I had promised to be here for the next two or three weeks."
Scooting over and laying her head on my shoulder, she looks down at Micah, "You already do enough to keep us safe. This isn't something you can just say no to. I completely understand and I would never get mad at you."
Kissing her forehead and leaning my head against hers, "I asked Summer to come over while I am gone. I will leave around lunch and I promise to be back home before supper."
Sage settles into my chest with her hand holding Micah's, and I smile leaning back watching the TV.
Later after lunch, Summer is sitting with Sage as she has Micah asleep on her chest. Letting the owners know what time I will be there, and changing my shirt.
I head towards Sage giving her a hug and kissing her softly, "I promise to be back by supper."
Sage smiles up at me, "Please drive safely. Let me know when you make it."
Heading out the door and Micah gives a small cry, making my chest ache that I even have to run into work for a few hours.
Making my way towards the construction site to meet the owners, and Tryston calls me.
Tryston: Hey man I figured I would tell you what is all going on.
Putting my phone on bluetooth and paying attention to the traffic. I notice that the same red truck has been following me since I left my house. With precaution I hit the record button on the dash camera. Shaking it off thinking it's nothing, and focusing back on the conversation with Tryston.
Me: Odd a red truck is following me, anyways go ahead man.
A loud screech fills the air drowning out Tryston's voice, and I look up as the red truck comes into view behind me.
Boom!
The red truck rear ends me and my truck slides out of control, and I can hear the back glass shattering behind me. However, the red truck doesn't stop and hits me again harder into the side.
Feeling my truck go airborne, I know deep down this isn't going to turn out great. I close my eyes saying a prayer for Sage and Micah, "I love you."
Then it all goes dark after that.
