Mike and Will pedaled their bikes down the familiar path leading from Hawkins Middle School to Mike's house, the summer sun casting long shadows across the pavement. The breeze ruffled their hair as they rode, chatting about the latest Dungeons & Dragons campaign and their plans for the weekend.

As they approached the outskirts of the neighborhood, Will's keen eyes caught sight of a small, trembling figure huddled by the side of the road. He skidded to a halt, causing Mike to brake sharply behind him.

"Will, what's going on?" Mike asked, concerned.

Will pointed to the tiny, forlorn puppy, its big eyes looking up at them with a mix of fear and hope. "Mike, look! It's an abandoned puppy. We have to help him!"

Mike frowned, glancing around. "Will, we don't know if it's safe. And taking care of a puppy is a lot of work."

Will's eyes filled with determination, his face adorably earnest. "Please, Mike? Can we at least bring him to your house? Just for a little while?"

Mike sighed, unable to resist Will's imploring gaze. "Alright, fine. But just for a bit."

Will beamed, hugging Mike tightly. "Thank you, Mike! You're the best!"

They carefully picked up the puppy and continued their journey to Mike's house, their pace slower to ensure the puppy's safety. Once there, they slipped into the basement, the cool, dim room a perfect hideaway.

Will immediately set to work, finding a bowl for water and a small dish for some leftover food. He wrapped the puppy in a warm blanket, his gentle hands soothing the little creature. Mike watched in awe as Will tended to the puppy with such care and tenderness.

The puppy, now feeling more secure, scampered over to Mike, playfully nipping at his fingers. Mike couldn't help but smile, his heart warmed by the sight of Will's happiness and the puppy's antics.

After a few hours of playing, Will looked up at Mike, a thoughtful expression on his face. "What should we name him?"

Mike considered for a moment. "How about Fluff?"

Will giggled. "I like Milo better."

Mike nodded, grinning. "Milo it is then. It's a perfect name."

Their time with Milo flew by, but a sudden knock at the door jolted them back to reality. Nancy barged into the basement, her eyes widening at the sight of the puppy.

"Mike, what's this dog doing here?"

Mike hesitated, not wanting to get Will in trouble. "I brought him in myself."

But sweet, honest Will couldn't let Mike take the blame. "It was me, Nancy. I found him and wanted to help."

Nancy looked at Mike, a knowing expression on her face. "Will just wanted to help, you know I can't say no to him."

Nancy sighed. "I know, Mike. I know."

The doorbell rang again, this time more insistently. Mike and Will exchanged worried glances and crept to the front of the house to see who it was. To their dismay, it was Chief Jim Hopper.

"Oh shoot, Will, it's the police," Mike whispered.

Will's voice trembled. "Do you think he's here for Milo?"

Hopper spoke with Karen briefly before heading toward the basement. Mike took Will's hand and dashed to a closet to hid inside.

"Come on out, boys," Hopper called. "I know you're in there."

Reluctantly, they emerged. Hopper explained that Milo had an owner who was searching for him. "How'd you know we had him?" Mike asked, crestfallen.

Hopper smiled gently. "I figured. You two always bike home together, and I know Will wouldn't be able to resist a cute, abandoned puppy."

Will's shoulders slumped as he offered Milo to Hopper. The chief tried to cheer him up, but Will's sadness was palpable. He just wanted a new dog friend.

After Hopper left, Mike saw the lingering sorrow in Will's eyes. He enveloped his friend in a comforting hug. "It's okay, Will. You still have me" meaning what he said but trying to get a giggle out of Will.

Will sniffled. "I know."

Mike gently lifted Will's chin admiring the boys glistening big brown eyes that he adored. "Hey, don't be sad. When we're older, I'll get you a puppy. A real cute one. We can take care of him together... yeah?"

Will's eyes sparkled with hope. "You'd really do that?"

Mike nodded. "Yeah, of course. And we can name him Fluff."

Will giggled at the name. "Promise?"

Mike laughed softly. "I promise."

"Come on, let's pull out your sketchbook and draw something cool. I want more of your drawings on my wall," Mike suggested.

Will's face lit up. "Oh! I can draw you a picture of Milo!"

Hand in hand, they settled on the couch, Will sketching away while Mike watched in admiration. They spent the rest of the night drawing and watching movies, their Friday night tradition. Eventually, they fell asleep under a warm blanket, Mike's arms wrapped protectively around Will.

They had been close like this since kindergarten, their bond unique and unspoken. Nancy and Jonathan had noticed but never questioned it. To Mike and Will, this was their normal. They knew they were special to each other, and that was all that mattered.
