Incoming call from S. James. YN looked at her phone as it buzzed. With furrowed eyebrows, she pressed the answer button.
"Hello," she said.
"Hey YN, are you busy right now?" Spencer's voice came through the phone.
"I'm just doing some studying, but what's up?" she said, closing her book on her pencil to not lose her place.
"So, I'm not sure if you've heard the news or not, but Darnell is going to be heading off to Germany soon," he said.
"Wait, what?" YN said.
"His mom got injured in the Army, so he's heading back soon to be with her," Spencer explained.
"Oh my gosh," YN said in shock and sadness for her ex-boyfriend.
"Yeah, so me and some of the family and friends are throwing him a little going-away party just to, you know, let him know that we're still here for him and we love him, and we are praying for his mom's health. And we know that you and him recently broke up, but he probably would really want for you to be there," Spencer continued.
"Absolutely," YN said. "Just let me know the day and time, and I'll be there."
"All right, I should have some solidified answers no later than Wednesday," he said.
"All right, talk to you then," she said.
"Bye," Spencer said, and they ended the call.
After hanging up, YN sat for a moment, processing the news about Darnell. She felt a mix of emotions—concern for his mother's health, sadness for their recent breakup, and a strong urge to support him during this difficult time.
She reopened her book but found it hard to concentrate. Thoughts of Darnell leaving and the upcoming party swirled in her mind. She remembered the good times they had shared and silently wished things could be different.
As she tried to focus on her studies, YN couldn't shake off the feeling of wanting to be there for Darnell. Despite their breakup, she cared deeply about his well-being and knew that showing up for him now was the right thing to do.
Hours passed, and YN found herself constantly checking her phone, waiting for Spencer's message with the party details. She wondered who else would be there, how Darnell was feeling about leaving, and what she could do to make his departure easier.
Finally, on Wednesday evening, Spencer's text arrived with the finalized plans. The party was set for Saturday evening at the james household. YN replied quickly, confirming her attendance and asking if there was anything specific she could bring or do to help.
With a sense of purpose, YN set aside her books and started planning what to wear and how to approach seeing Darnell again after their breakup. She wanted to be strong for him, to offer comfort and support without overstepping any boundaries.
As Saturday approached, YN's anticipation grew. She knew the party would be emotional but hoped it would also bring a sense of closure and healing for everyone involved.
With a deep breath, YN stood in front of the door, gathering herself before she sent a firm knock. A faint "come in" was heard from the other side. She pushed open the door and walked in, greeted by the sight of Coop and Cam hanging a few streamers.
"Hey YN!" They chimed together, walking over to greet her with warm hugs.
"Hey y'all," YN replied with a smile. "Where is everyone?" she asked, scanning the room.
"Spencer, Ms. Grace, Spencer and Dillon's mother, and Dillon took Darnell out for dinner, which leaves us here setting up for when they get back," Coop explained, stepping back onto a chair to finish hanging the streamers.
