Josh

From then on, it was me, Alex, and Esther. Esther, Alex, and I. We became a trio, our lives inexplicably tangled, Esther oblivious to the glares passed between Alex and I whenever the other got a little to close to her for comfort.

Weeks passed, exams came and went. Alex and I finished our chem project, or Alex did anyway. I helped. A bit.

I groan and slam my head against my desk, the words in my psychology textbook squiggle up at me from the page. I take off my glasses and rub the heels of my hands against my eyes. I pick up my phone, already thinking about texting Alex, when I realise that it's midnight. Great.

I shut my textbook and slide out of my chair, collapsing facedown onto my bed. My phone buzzes.

Amazing and awesome chemistry partner:

Hey

Can we talk about fish?

I scoff in disbelief. What is he on about? Mind you that's not the strangest text I've ever gotten from him.

Me:

sure

what about fish?

Amazing and awesome chemistry partner:

They think theyre better than me

And that pisses me off

Me:

...

of course it would

Amazing and awesome chemistry partner:

What's that supposed to mean???

Me:

whatever the heck you want it to i guess

Amazing and awesome chemistry partner:

HEY

Watch ur fucking language

Me:

you are officially the world's largest idiot

Amazing and awesome chemistry partner:

No please, I couldnt take ur title

Anyway

U wanna call

?

Me:

...

alex

it is

12 o clock in the morning

go to bed

The typing dots appear, then disappear, and I nearly drop my phone as it starts to ring.

Incoming call: amazing and awesome chemistry partner

"Dude, what is wrong with you?"

He snickers on the other end of the line, and I can picture him laughing in my mind.

"Hey, you picked up, didn't you?"

I don't reply for a moment. There's a shuffling sound on Alex's end of the call, and a sniffle. We lie there in silence for a moment longer, before Alex suddenly bursts into tears.

I sit up in shock, not sure what to do.

"Hey, Alex. Alex!"

He tries to contain his sobbing; with not much success it sounds like.
