chapter one | 𝓪 𝓷𝓮𝔀 𝓱𝓸𝓶𝓮
────── 𝓚elsey Zhang despises coffee. If there's anything she hates more than coffee, it's something unknown to her. She swears up and down that people who drink the gritty, dirt-flavored water everyday are just plain evil. And don't even get her started on the smell; it's pungent, bitter, disgusting smell makes her want to vomit. There is an ongoing joke at the 99th precinct in which Kelsey can smell a coffee shop from a mile away.
It's a nightmare since coffee shops seem to be on every other corner in New York. And the worst part? Her best friend is the biggest coffee lover known to man. Like actually. She probably can drink twenty cups of coffee a day if it wasn't insanely unhealthy.
The blonde finds herself nearing a Starbucks, praying to whatever almighty being was up in the sky─probably the same one who decided to fuck her in the luck department. She prays for some terrible event to happen in order for her to not have to enter the shop filled with a billion different scents, all of which originate from the same thing that makes her gag.
As she gets closer and closer, she decides to hold her breath for as long as possible, though she know it won't do anything to stop the horrid waft of coffee from burning her nostrils. Yes, she is always overdramatic when it comes to how disgusting she finds coffee. She enters the shop, having to gasp for air, perhaps the worst mistake in her life─which is saying a lot, given all the stuff she's experienced.
She looks around, scoping out all the stuck-up business women on their phones, as well as the nerdy guys who seem to be mesmerized by the newest bundle of color that is all caffeine and no flavor. The two completely different species of humans seem at peace for once, all united and sipping their overpriced beverages.
Then, at the corner in the back, she finds her. Scarlett Walsh. Her best friend of eight years. She was clutching her venti-or-whatever-the-largest-size-is-called white chocolate mocha frappuccino.
Once Scarlett notices Kelsey, a smile bright enough to take the sun's place replaces her bored expression, and a small wave entices Kelsey to walk over there, to forget about all the hellish scents. And so she does. Scarlett Walsh is the sweetest person you'd ever meet in their often-times horrible city. She had been there for Kelsey the entire time they'd known each other. She would do anything to protect those she loves, as well as those she doesn't even know. Scarlett Walsh is a true police detective.
