Kanae POV:
I was in charge of taking care of Hisato now. It had been a few weeks now, with me and Hisato being able to build a pretty good connection. I found out that he was rather meek, and unable to make some of the most simple of choices for himself, but I thought for a child at this age, it was most likely a good thing to prevent him from hurting himself.
Narrarator POV:
Inside the estate, a tall boy named Hisato was struggling with a pot in the kitchen. At seven years old, Hisato was already towering at 1.93 meters, his height an odd contrast to his youthful face. His determined look remained unchanged, though his large hands seemed too awkward for the delicate task of cooking.
Kanae entered the kitchen just in time to see Hisato nearly tip the pot over. Her heart skipped a beat, and she rushed over, her voice filled with both concern and affection. "Hisato, what are you doing?" she asked, gently taking the pot from his hand and setting it aside.
Hisato looked down at her, his height making the kitchen seem even smaller. Despite his size, he was still very much a child, with a mixture of determination and frustration on his face. "I wanted to make something for everyone. I thought... I thought I could help," he said, his voice wavering.
Kanae, her head tilted up to look at him, placed a gentle hand on his arm. "Cooking is wonderful, Hisato, but it can be dangerous if you don't know how to do it properly. Why didn't you ask for help?"
He looked away, his tall frame suddenly seeming vulnerable. "You were happy when Aoi made you food" he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper
Kanae looked at her 'now little brother'. She knew that Hisato often projected his memories of Hayato onto her, seeking the same kind of sibling love and protection he had lost. Kanae placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. "I understand, Hisato. But remember, I'm here for you. Just like you're elder brother!"
Hisato looked down at her, his eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "You remind me of him, you know. You always take care of me."
Kanae smiled, her eyes warm and reassuring. "I'm glad I can be here for you, Hisato. Now, how about we cook together? I'll show you how to do it safely, and we can surprise everyone with a delicious meal."
Hisato's face brightened, and he nodded eagerly. "Okay! I want to learn from you."
Together, they moved through the kitchen. Kanae began by explaining the recipe, pointing out the ingredients and the measurements written on the piece of paper in front of them. Hisato squinted at the paper, his dyslexia making the words and numbers swim before his eyes.T
Kanae noticed his struggle and gently took the paper from him. "It's okay, Hisato. We can do this together. Let's start with something simple."
She handed him a carrot and demonstrated how to peel it. Hisato's large hands fumbled with the knife, the task proving more difficult than he had anticipated. He nicked his finger slightly and winced.
Kanae quickly took his hand, inspecting the small cut. "It's just a little scratch. You'll be okay," she said soothingly, applying a small bandage. "Let's try again. Take it slow."
Hisato nodded, his determination undeterred. He managed to peel the carrot, though it took much longer than it would for anybody should've taken. Kanae encouraged him with smiles and gentle words, her patience unwavering.
Next, Kanae explained how to chop the vegetables. Hisato looked at the knife, imagining it to be similar to a sword. He attempted to slash through the vegetables, proving that he was very useless in the kitchen by chopping right through the chopping board. Kanae watched in amazement.
"I'm so sorry!" Hisato said, bowing his head
"No, No, please stand up. It's your first time!" Kanae said.
He continued cutting, once again proving that talent in swordsmanship didn't extend anywhere to the kitchen. His cuts were uneven, and a few pieces flew off the cutting board.
Kanae chuckled softly. "It's okay, Hisato. Cooking takes practice. We'll get there."
She guided his hands, showing him the proper technique. Slowly, Hisato began to improve, although it was slower than a snail, there was some minimal improvement, due to Kanae's patient guidance.
When it came time to measure the ingredients, Hisato struggled with the numbers. The fractions and units seemed like a foreign language to him. Kanae stood beside him, helping him measure out each ingredient carefully. "We'll take it step by step," she reassured him.
Despite his difficulties, Hisato's determination never wavered. Together, they mixed the ingredients and set the pot on the stove. Hisato stirred the mixture, occasionally splashing some out of the pot. Kanae laughed, wiping away the spills and praising his efforts.
When the meal was finally ready, they carried the dishes to the dining area, where Shinobu and Kanao were waiting. The aroma of the food filled the air, and everyone gathered around the table, eager to taste the fruits of their labor.
Hisato beamed with pride as he watched everyone enjoy the meal. "Kanae helped me," he announced, his voice filled with joy.
Shinobu smiled warmly, her eyes twinkling with affection. "It's delicious, Hisato. You did a great job."
Kanao flipped her coin. With heads meaning that she would say it was good, and tails not saying anything.
It landed on heads.
"It's good" Kanao said, with her face not changing.
Hisato smiled. It had taken a whole week for Hisato to learn how to interact with Kanao, but the progress was there.
Even though he was slower than everyone else. Even if his skills at anything beside swordsmanship didn't improve, that didn't mean he would stop trying.
