The evening breeze was cool against my skin as I walked towards the restaurant, my thoughts still preoccupied from the afternoon's events. I needed to push those feelings aside and focus on the night ahead. But more importantly, I needed to push any and all feelings aside altogether and prioritize what was really important.
When we had our occasional outings, dinner with the team was supposed to be a chance for us to unwind and enjoy eachothers company outside of the stress, celebrate our progress, and strategize for the weeks to come. I relished in quality time with people, as I loved spending time in the comfort of others. Aside from that, there was so much to prepare for and frankly, we needed to put an end to the entire Elizabeth situation so I could divert my attention to fundraising efforts and reviewing with the marketing team to increase voter outreach.
I was starting to imagine myself on that beach more often the longer the campaign.
But it was all worth it for the American people. I knew what I had signed up for; a high-stakes game with much to lose, but a plentiful reward.
The restaurant was an intimate, upscale place with dim lighting and an atmosphere that allowed a moment of escapism. The burgundy booths, with mahogany wood accents, and vintage fixtures gave the space the type of ambience you see in a Hollywood movie. The scent of fresh herbs and bread wafted through the air, making my stomach growl. Jack always knew how to pick the right places, and this steakhouse was genuinely more luxurious than I pegged him to be. I spotted my team at a large table near the back, laughing and chatting animatedly. Jack stood at the head of the table talking to Grant, looking relaxed and at ease. He caught my eye as I approached, giving me a warm smile.
He wore a black long-sleeve dress shirt, black golf pants, and brown leather shoes. In addition, he wore his signature black Invicta watch with a brown band. I always admired that about him, he didn't care about vanity or flashing his wealth. He never had to. His presence arguably commanded a room, drawing the attention of everyone to witness everything that he was. He was so magnetic without even trying.
"Troi, over here!" Vanessa waved me over, her red glasses glinting in the candlelight. I took the empty seat across from her, close to Jack at the head of the table.
