Beyond was to share a room with Near, who was his age, which left L to share a room with Light. As you can probably guess, neither one was too ecstatic with this arrangement. Their room was huge, with two beds on the opposite ends and curtains for privacy. Light said in a somewhat forced polite tone, "I'll take the one by the door, if you don't mind."

L agreed, saying, "Yeah, okay. I don't care either way."

Light rolled his eyes at his less than polite reply and laid down on his bed. He checked the time and saw it was about 8 pm. He had already eaten his fill at the restaurant and decided to go to bed. He changed his clothes and went to bed, closing the curtains. He switched off his light (pun not intended) and closed his eyes. As soon as he slipped into sleep, he was plagued with nightmares.

He saw his mom yelling, "You faggot! Stay away from my child." He saw his dad striking him across the face. He saw a small girl, undoubtedly his unborn sister, yelling, "Faggot, faggot, you are dirty. You are crazy, a freak, a waste of space. Go away from me. I hate you."

Light woke up shouting, and crying. He saw a faint light peeking out from between the folds of the curtains. He shifted his curtain a bit to get a sneak peek of L. He was not in a good shape. He was crying with his face in his hands. There were a lot of newspapers and what looked like information for a case, lying around L. Suddenly, Light felt a burst of pity for him. He had never bothered to ask why he was homeless. Light felt terrible for hating him earlier. Just because Light was a social person doesn't mean that everyone else would be too.

Light went back to bed, still disturbed by his nightmares, but strained his ears for L's voice, waiting for him to quieten down. All Light heard before he slipped into a dreamless sleep was, "I love you, mama and papa. I-I miss you both."
