She turned a little to rest her back to his chest to make herself comfortable in his embrace, when her heightened senses suddenly became aware of a tingly sensation and she bolted upright. It felt like an alarm, but not so much an alarming alarm, more of an alert. The TARDIS was trying to tell her something.
"Did you feel that?"
The Doctor grinned: "I did. Can you tell what she says yet?"
"It's... something is... No, I can't. I understand it is something she wants to tell me, not you. It is something specific, but she is not sending emotions, I can distinguish them. These are... like a note, left on the side table, scribbled in haste. I can read my name on top, but the rest is undecipherable. You know, don't you?"
"Come on, let's decipher the note. You're gonna love it."
Walking down the corridors towards the console room, Rose contemplated about her readiness to become a mother. She did not even begin to grasp the full meaning of what it meant to be a wife, let alone the wife of an alien, living inside a spaceship. Perhaps becoming a mother would give some sanity to the whole turn of confounding events. On the other hand, it could complicate things, being as it was she knew absolutely nothing about carrying a child, and even less about an alien child. She wondered if there would be someone she could talk to.
It would have to wait, for they had arrived at the console room and she immediately spotted a flashing light on the right, where a small pillar box was placed.
"Is that..?"
Rose felt her heart do a tumble in happy anticipation as she looked at the Doctor and saw his wide grin as an affirmative response.
She almost skipped to the box and opened it. Inside was a letter.
"It worked!" She called out and with a triumphant smile she pulled out the letter and this time literally skipped back to her husband.
"Of course it worked!" He exclaimed, feigning offence, but then he laughed: "Like I told you, the box inside the post office near your parents home is an exact replica, well... I should say, this box is the replica, that one is the genuine article. All they need to do is insert the letter in the slot and the temporal displacement field will send it straight here, no matter when of where we are."
"Actually seeing how it works, gives a much clearer explanation, Doctor. I am learning quickly, but most of what you say to me is still just a lot of... what did you call it? Wibbly wobbly..."
"Timey Wimey... stuff."
"Yeah." Rose grinned up at him, holding her letter like a treasure.
"So, who's it from?"
"Judging by the handwriting, I'd say it's from my friend, Martha. Would you mind, if I read it right away?"
"Of course not, it's been three weeks, you must be dying for some news of the home front."
"The home front," Rose laughed at the description and they sat down on the jump seat.
"Shall I read it aloud?"
"You sure? Maybe there's some girl stuff in there she wouldn't want me to know about."
"I don't have any secrets from you, Doctor. There is nothing she, or any one else for that matter, can write that I will keep from you."
His smile was warm and the kiss he gave her was tender. They deepened it but for a moment, for Rose was much to impatient to read what her friend's letter said.
To my dearest friend.
Knowing this might take quite some time before your eyes will read these words, it gives me some worries that I do not know where you are. We heard about your hasty departure from the inn, as you will understand gossip always travels fast. I am certain you are in good health and safety with your husband by your side, yet I must confess I will not be completely at ease until I will hear from you.
