13. GENZLINGER.
WHILST JESS CONTINUED TO GET the Thanksgiving dinner ready, with the help of Schmidt and Cece. April, Nick, Luke and Winston all stood around, feeling incredibly awkward with Paul sitting on the couch, the football on but seemingly none of them wanted to be the first to make the move and sit next to Jess' date.
Eventually, Winston was finally the first to sit beside Paul. Mainly because Jess pushed the trio forwards when she decided to go and get changed, sending them a pointed look to interact with the man.
April watched with furrowed brows and a tilted head as Paul and Winston sat next to each other. Not saying anything with Winston staring at Paul and Paul glancing around nervously. Luke stepped over to the couch and took a seat far from both men, trying to act as normal as he could.
"Guy roommates," Paul finally said, chucking nervously.
"What am I? The next door neighbor?" April muttered, folding her arms over her chest.
"A hot neighbor," Nick muttered. His eyes widening when he realised what he just said and before April could comment, he rushed forward to sit on the couch next to Winston.
April cleared her throat. She heard the three men converse as she walked back towards the kitchen. Wordlessly, she stole Schmidt's opened beer and took a large gulp of it, ignoring Schmidt's protests. He sighed, shook his head and walked off to the other side of the kitchen, muttering under his breath whilst April stood next to Cece.
"So...you and Nick?" Cece asked, her voice so quiet that April barely heard her.
April furrowed her brows and turned her head towards the taller woman, "What?"
"Oh come on, 'a hot neighbour'," Cece said, sending April a pointed look, "I mean, the way he looks at you alone is enough," She shrugged, taking her eyes off of April and looking down at the vegetables she was transferring from one bowl to the other.
April shook her head, "No idea what you're on about," She said, taking another sip of beer, "We're just friends."
Cece hummed, looking unconvinced and nodding her head slowly, "Sure you are," She smirked, taking the bowl from the side and walking past April, sending her a quick wink.
April shook her head and finished the beer before grabbing another one from the fridge. She sighed as she opened it up, sipping it, her eyes travelling over towards the couch. Locking onto the back of Nick. Biting her lip as she just stared at the back of his head. Not really knowing what to feel or think.
As if he could feel her eyes on the back of him, he looked over his shoulder, his eyes widening slightly as soon as they connected with April's. She did the same thing and quickly looked away when there was a loud bang from further in the flat. She slammed her drink down and ran out of the kitchen, her eyes widening in shock as she spotted Schmidt on the ground with an uncooked yet burnt turkey in his arms, smoke bellowing out behind him causing everyone to cough.
Cece, Jess, Paul and Luke all left the apartment, keeping the door of it open as they gathered near the elevator. Nick, Schmidt and Winston stood on the couch, waving pillows around to try and disperse the smoke. April had rushed towards the windows, opening them all up, coughing into her arm. Once she opened them all, she joined the guys on the couch, grabbing the blanket and waving it around.
"It's like a Prince video," Schmidt commented.
"God!" Nick groaned.
April could feel her arms getting tired yet the smoke still wasn't going away.
"Remember when it was only us living here, and we had no fires?" Winston asked.
"This is ridiculous!" Nick commented, "Three months ago we didn't even know this girl."
"My Lasik'd eye is freaking out!" Schmidt exclaimed.
"How is this smoke not going away?" April groaned, feeling frustrated that it was still so hard to breathe and see. She could barely see a few feet away from her.
"Okay. That's it. We're leaving," Nick announced, dropping the pillows onto the ground, he placed his hand on April's back as he jumped down from next to her, "Guys, let's get out of here."
April didn't need to be told twice. She dropped the blanket, not caring where it fell, and jumped down from the couch onto it. Schmidt and Winston also dropped their stuff and all four of them walked out of the apartment. Winston closing it behind them all.
"We're going to the bar," Nick announced, "We can't get rid of the smoke."
"You coming, Luke?" April asked, looking up at her friend.
He instantly nodded, joining them. But before they could reach the elevator, Jess stopped in front of them, shaking her head.
"Wait, wait, wait," Paul suddenly said before Jess could even open her mouth, "Hold on. We can still do this. What are you guys doing?"
"Leaving this hell," April muttered, folding her arms over her chest.
"I have been dying to try that food you've been cooking all day," Paul continued, gesturing to Schmidt, "You've been slaving away in there...What's your name again?"
"Schmidt."
"Right," Paul nodded.
"You know, it's my last name," Schmidt announced.
"Well, my last name is Genzlinger, and I'd like to eat the food that you've been making all day, Schmidt," Paul announced.
April groaned.
Schmidt nodded, a large grin appeared on his face, "Yeah, all right. Genzlinger."
"I'm with Genzlinger," Winston suddenly said, pointing at Paul.
"I have an idea!" Jess exclaimed, she tore her loved-up gaze from Paul and looked around the group, "Let's go next door!"
April sighed, "Do we have to?" She asked, throwing her head back and closing her eyes. She was too annoyed to celebrate Thanksgiving the way that Jess wanted to.
Jess nodded, she grabbed April's arm, "Of course you do. This can still be amazing!"
April rolled her eyes, "Doubt it."
