A few hours later Danny comes home. He had to stay after for lacrosse practice so it's 6:00 by the time he walks through the door.

"Hey!" He says cheerfully to her, putting his bag by the door and getting a glass of water.

"Hi." She replies, not looking at him.

"Where were you at lunch today? I was looking for you." He turns to her, eyes searching for an answer.

"I got dismissed," She still doesn't look at him, her face turned so her can't see the bruise.

"Oh, really? For what?"

"Ummmmm, health?" She doesn't want to tell him, but he's too curious, and he would find out one way or another. "My mom picked me up from the nurse." She sighs and he freezes.

Then he slams his water glass down and comes towards her. "What?!?! What happened!?!?!" He grabs her face and holds it in his hands, his eyes going to the bruise.

"Nothing! It's no big deal! I'm fine!" She try to calm him down but it doesn't work.

"What happened to your face!?!?!"

"Nothing! I just fell down some stairs! That's all!"

She can tell he doesn't believe her, but he softens his voice as he asks again. "What. Happened?" His thumb brushes her cheek. "Tell me the truth. Please."

"I just. I. I got in some trouble, that's all, I'm fine now! Can we just drop it?"

He looks like he might, his hands fall from her face and he takes a step back. Closes his eyes. And takes a deep breathe. His face calming. She sighs with relief. But when he opens his eyes they catch on her neck, and the ring of bruises there. He goes stock still. Then his eyes flash with rage, and he stares daggers at the bruises, like he can make them tell him who caused them if he scares them.

"Who." His voice is dark, but calm. It's almost terrifying. "Touched. You??!?!?!?!!?" He pins her in place with his eyes.

"Nobody! I'm OK! REALLY! IT'S NOTHING! PLEASE! JUST CALM DOWN!" Her voice rises as she talks. She doesn't want him to flip out!

"IT'S NOT NOTHING!!!" He's shouting now too. "YOUR FUCKING NECK IS BLACK AND BLUE!!!! TELL ME WHO FUCKING DID THIS!!" He looks worried, scared even. Like he doesn't know what to do.

"No!" She's exasperated. "Because then you're going to do something stupid. And that's not going to fix anything!"

He takes her hands in his, tenderly, "I promise." He stares deep into her eyes, voice back to a normal volume. "On my grandmothers cat, that I won't do anything stupid!"

She gives him a skeptical look. He looks at her with puppy dog eyes. "Please! Just, tell me who did this. I'm begging you!"

She tries not to give in, but she can't hold back. "Fine. But stop looking at me like that!" She pauses, scared of what will happen next. "It was...Evan, and his buddies. One of them was Derek, I'm not sure who the other one was, but..." She stops as his expression darkens. "NO!!!!! NO!NO!NO!NO!" She glares at him as he drops her hands and starts towards the door. "DON'T YOU FUCKING DARE! I SWEAR TO EVERYTHING THAT IS HOLY IF YOU DON'T STOP RIGHT NOW..." He cuts her off.

"My grandmother doesn't have a cat." His voice is level, but his face is a mask of rage, and his eyes betray dangerous thoughts. "And nobody," He growls, "Is going to get away with hurting you! ESPECIALLY NOT SOME SHITHEAD LIKE EVAN!!" He opens the door. "I'll be back."

"Danny! Wait! Please!"

"You can't just let them get away with this!! I'll handle it!! I'll be back! Now go to bed! You look exhausted!" With that he steps out into the night and shuts the door behind him.
