Jade's POV…
I was consumed with concern as I watched Kookie storm out of my apartment in a fit of anger and sadness. As he left without a word, I couldn't help but wonder what had transpired between the time he left to get pizza and his return to trigger such a drastic change in his demeanor. I unfolded my legs from beneath me and reached for my phone on the coffee table, determined to find out what had upset him so much.
The phone rang incessantly, eventually surrendering to voicemail, which was unusual when it came to me calling Kookie. He would typically answer my call on the first ring. After leaving him a short message, I sat on the sofa, nibbling on a slice of cheese pizza, anxiously waiting for his call.
After sitting on the sofa thirty minutes waiting for his call or for him to return to my place for our little movie and pizza get together night, the movie I had selected for us to watch lost its appeal. Disheartened, I switched off the TV and carefully stowed away the remaining slices of pizza in the refrigerator. Needing something to take my mind off, Kookie, I grabbed my car keys and purse off the coffee table, then left the apartment. With my phone to my right ear, I made my car in the humid late afternoon air.
“Hello, this is Bryan Copeland. I'm sorry that I can't come to the phone at the moment, but if you'll leave me your name and a brief message, I'll be sure to get back in touch with you as soon as possible,” his voicemail echoed through the line. Disappointed, I decided against leaving a message and ended the call. As I settled into my car, fastening my seatbelt and igniting the engine, I sought solace in the radio.
The enchanting melody of “Angel” by Halle Bailey filled the air, prompting an involuntary bobbing of my head to the rhythm. This song captivated me from the first moment I heard it on Spotify, leading me to play it on repeat for three consecutive hours. With my head still nodding to the beat, I embarked on my journey towards Bryan's place.
I answered the phone as soon as I saw Kookie's name light up on the screen. “Where are you, and why are you upset?” I asked him before he could even say a word.
“I'm not upset,” he replied, while at the same time ignoring the other question I asked him.
“Liar!” I spoke loudly into the phone while pulling into a vacant parking spot at Bryan's apartment complex. “Let's try this again, and this time, I want the truth. Where are you, and why did you leave my place upset?” I demanded, unfastening my seatbelt.
“I'm telling you the truth, Jade. I'm really not upset,” Kookie repeated, trying to sound convincing but was failing miserably.
“When you're ready to be honest with me, give me a call back,” I stated at the same time I heard him release a heavy sigh on the other end of the line.
“What are you doing?” he asked before I could end the call.
“I'll tell you what I'm doing when you're ready to come clean about why you're angry. Until then, goodbye,” I responded, this time ending the call in the midst of him saying something to me.
As I exited the car, I received a text from him that read: “Where are you?” When I didn't respond to his text, my phone erupted into a ringing frenzy. I sent his call to voicemail, then tucked my phone into my back pocket and entered the Ridgeville Apartment Complex. The persistent ringing of Kookie's calls echoed in the small, confined space of the elevator as it rose to the seventh floor.
