***Kookie's POV…***
"How was your weekend?" Delaney Alvarez, the front desk clerk, asked me as I entered the office.
"Crazy but enjoyable," I responded, reminiscing about the events of the past few days. "And how was your weekend?"
"Quite pleasant, Sir.” Delaney replied with a nod of her head, then asked, “Will Dr. McCall be joining us today?"
"She isn't here… yet?" I asked, glancing at my watch. Just this morning, Jade had mentioned she was getting ready for work.
"No, and she has a patient waiting on her," Delaney informed me, jotting down notes on a chart.
As I made my way to my office, I pulled out my cell phone and dialed Jade's number. "I'm on my way, Kookie," she reassured me as soon as the call connected.
"Is everything okay?" I asked, a tinge of concern in my voice.
"Yeah, everything's fine. Why do you ask?" Jade asked me.
"Because you're never late for work or anything else for that matter," I replied, settling into my desk chair.
"I had to rush back home to grab my work badge and cell phone, that's why I'm running late," Jade explained, her voice sounding distant.
"What are you doing that makes you sound so far away from your phone?"
"I'm driving to work, and I have you coming through the speaker in my car."
"Oh, Drive safely! I'll be waiting for you when you arrive," I said to her before a knock interrupted our conversation, signaling someone at my office door.
"Thank you for checking up on me, Kookie. See you soon," Jade replied before ending the call.
"Please come in," I called out, placing my cell phone on the desk.
"Your first patient, Mr. Yu has arrived," Nurse Koike Xiao informed me after peeking her head inside the room.
"I'll be right there," I responded, getting up from my chair. Swiftly, I retrieved my white lab coat from the back of the chair and my stethoscope from the desk before leaving the office. "Good morning, Mr. Yu. How have you been?" I greeted him as I entered the room, taking a moment to review his medical chart.
"Not so great, doc."
"What seems to be the issue?" I inquired, placing his file on the counter.
"I've been experiencing difficulty urinating and feeling nauseous. When I do manage to pee, it's painful, and there's blood in my urine. I've also been having back and side pain."
"How long has this been happening, Mr. Yu?" I asked, inserting the stethoscope into my ears and walking over to where he was sitting on the table.
"For about two to three weeks."
"Why didn't you mention this during your last visit?" I asked, positioning the stethoscope above his chest.
"Because I despise going to the doctor. I was afraid you would tell me something I didn't want to hear."
"Even if you don't like coming into the office and are afraid of receiving unfavorable news, that shouldn't stop you from coming in to get a checkup. For a person your age, it is crucial to prioritize your health when faced with something as serious as this," I advised him, urging him to take a deep breath.
