I walked into my empty house, feeling the sadness and pain of old memories.

The house was a mess, with signs that the police had been there. It smelled like beer, which was disgusting, so i opened all the windows right away and started cleaning.

I needed to keep busy, especially since today was court day.

I had promised myself to attend, to see him one last time because i'm not planning on ever visiting him in jail.

I cleaned the house with determination, scrubbing the floors and finding blood spots, knowing it's probably my blood.

I threw away all the alcohol and bottles, cleaning every door and window to get rid of any trace of him.

When he was arrested, it felt like my whole life had been a lie.

I realized everything that happened since my mom died was his fault.

I still didn't know exactly how he murdered her, only that he must have hired someone to cause the car crash that was meant to kill both of us.

But i'm not sure if i want to to know more, afraid my heart can't take it.

For a moment, i thought his imprisonment would make my life better, giving me a second chance to live a good, happy life.

But then, everything changed again, due to Mateo.

I wasn't going to beg anyone to talk to me.

If he didn't want me in his life, i would accept it, even though it hurt.

I got rid of the old couches, his bed, and anything he used. I didn't care if he ever came back; i don't want any sign of him in this house.

Just as i was preparing to start cleaning my room, i heard a knock at the door.

Leaving the cleaning supplies on the floor, i went to the door and opened it slightly.
A woman in an officer's uniform was there, smiling at me. I smiled back warmly.

"Hello, how can i help you?" I asked politely, noticing the notebook and pen in her hand.

"Is this Ms. Ansley?" she asked, still smiling.

"Yes, that's me," I replied.

"May I come in, please?" she requested. I nodded and opened the door wider, letting her in. She looked around the place.

"I'm Officer Maya. I'm here to check on you and the house. How have you been holding up?" she asked, taking notes.

"I'm okay, just trying to clean up this mess," I said lightly, and she nodded.

"Are you managing alright on your own? Any financial problems? Do you have a job?" Her questions were thorough, though i wasn't in the mood to talk.

"I'm looking for a job, and i'm managing alright, thank you," I replied with a small smile, and she nodded again.

"Well, my team brought some supplies for you after seeing the condition of the house, just to help make things a bit easier," she said kindly.
