*Cavanaughs*
A new year meant new opportunities and facing new challenges in life. Toby is taking a new opportunity by taking this job interview. His dad offered to drive him to Harrisburg because he worried the roads would be icy. Toby assured him he'd be fine going alone and that he was only going to be gone for a day. Toby is facing a new challenge by taking Spencer along with him and hoping no one will know. He didn't know what Spencer would tell her parents.
"So, you and Spencer alone together in a motel room, huh," said Caleb along with a suggested wink.
Caleb came over early that morning to see him off. Toby doesn't know why he didn't just call, but Caleb's never been the one to miss an opportunity to poke fun. Toby looked back at the house to make sure his father wasn't outside.
"That's not what this trip is about," Toby said.
"It's not?" Caleb leaned against Toby's truck. "Hello, you're taking her out of town, getting away from here, and you're sharing a motel room."
"Well, it wouldn't make much sense to get two rooms," Toby said.
"Is there one bed or two?"
Toby sighed and answered quietly, "one."
Caleb laughed. "You are about to get lucky."
Toby rolled his eyes, "we just want to go so we can spend some time alone together for longer than thirty minutes and not inside my truck. Besides, I plan on taking her out to a nice dinner. I'm not doing this because I'm expecting something."
"Well, word of advice," Caleb slapped a box of condoms against his chest. "Expect something even when you're not expecting something."
Before Toby could say anything back, Mr. Cavanaugh walked out of the house. Caleb stood in front of Toby to block his father's view while Toby quickly stuffed the box inside his go bag. Mr. Cavanaugh's face lit up at the sight of Caleb.
"Hey, there, Caleb. Why are you doing here?"
Caleb slapped Toby on the back and said, "just wanted to wish our boy luck on his interview. I wanted to give him some tips on what he might expect when he's away."
Toby sent a glare in his direction. Caleb grinned widely. Mr. Cavanaugh was too dense to catch on to anything.
"Okay," Mr. Cavanaugh said. He turned to his son and said, "good luck with the interview, son. I'm assuming you'll call me to tell me how it went."
Toby nodded, "I will."
"Watch out for ice," Mr. Cavanaugh said.
"Yeah, and don't forget to be mindful of roadblocks!" Caleb added.
Toby tried his best not to give a reaction to Caleb's comment. He could see Caleb grinning from his sideview. He was having way too much fun with this, but he still trusted Caleb not to say anything to his father. Toby got in his truck and drove away.
. General.
Spencer told her parents that she and Aria were going away on a girl's trip to stay at an overnight spa. Mrs. Hastings seemed pleased that her daughter was doing something relaxing before starting her semester of college. Aria showed up at the Hastings house with her bag looking excited to go. The real plan was for Aria to drive Spencer across the town line to where Toby would be waiting for her.
"The lengths you and Toby are willing to go just to spend time together," Aria said.
They were in her car now driving away from the Hastings house.
