Azul

I didn't know whether to feel scared or safe around him. He helped me but this could also be a trick. For now he's just sitting there, silently.

He seemed nice, but you can never tell in this world. I didn't feel safe around him, but oddly enough I didn't feel unsafe either. It might just be because we're both protogens, but I shouldn't let my guard down. Not even for a second.

The seconds flew by like nothing, with us just sitting there on the floor. Seconds turned to minutes, and eventually minutes turned to hours. Time seemed to fly by, but neither of us moved. We were still in the same spot.

Unlike before you wouldn't hear a gunshot at all, the last one was probably thirty minutes ago. It was the late afternoon, and the sun started to go down.

I was starving. I haven't eaten anything all day. I lost my supplies in the heat of the battle, and not knowing what army prevailed, it was dangerous to go outside of this place.

A move has to be made sooner or later, I muster up all my courage to ask the mysterious protogen next to me, "When are we going to get out of this place?" My voice had a lack of energy, my throat was dry and it was hard to speak.

"It's best we wait until nightfall, that way if there is anyone out there, they'll have a hard time seeing us."

I just let out a sigh in response. The sun won't set for another couple hours.

I glanced at him without turning my head, trying not to make it obvious I was looking at him. He had a perplexed look on his visor. He was definitely thinking of something, but what could it be?

I don't know how long I'm going to stay with him. I don't know how long I can. It's probably best to give in and lighten the mood. I was obviously the weaker one out of us, and being unarmed put me at a huge disadvantage if we were to fight. "What's on your mind?"

"A lot."

It wasn't a very clear answer but I could tell what he meant. A lot was on my mind too. We were both scared of what was outside these walls.

"Are you a new recruit?"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean is this your first time in battle?"

It was my first time, but should I tell him that? I still don't know if he can be trusted. If he wanted to harm me he most likely would have done so by now, that's probably not why he asked.

"Yes, why do you ask?"

"To see how much experience you have."

That's not the answer I wanted to hear. Is this guy really gonna try to kill me?

"To know how effective you would be if we ran into danger."

Hmm, Yeah I guess that makes sense. If there was a threat it would probably be best if the more experienced one was taking the shots. He's still too mysterious to take what he says as the complete truth though.

"How old are you Azul?"

He said this with a lot more emotion in his voice than before, and he used my name? I wonder where this is coming from.

"I'm 17, I'll be 18 in a week or two though."

"Really? You seem younger than that."

"Yeah, I get that a lot. People say I'm lucky I look like this. They say I'm not fit to be a soldier, so they had me be a combat medic instead."
