Chapter 35

A/N: Just a short update. Author is busy with work. I will try to update more once I'm free.

"How's she?" Nam asked the doctor, who had just come out after examining Freen. They had been waiting outside for almost twenty minutes without knowing what was happening.

"Which one of you is her partner?" the doctor asked.

Nam and Heng exchanged confused glances.

"Neither of us," Heng replied.

"Then you should call them. I’d like to speak with them," the doctor said bitterly.

"She is unavailable at the moment," Nam blurted out.

"Out of town," Heng added.

"Work," they both said at the same time.

The doctor looked at them, genuinely confused. "Which one is it?" she asked, raising her eyebrows.

"All of the above?"

The doctor shook her head disbelieving.

They both stared, waiting for an explanation. The doctor shook her head in disappointment.

"She's extremely malnourished for her condition. She needs food, a proper diet, and enough water. None of that seems to be in her system. These early stages are very important, no matter what you may think."

Nam sighed, recalling all the times she had to practically force Freen to eat something. She should have been more insistent.

"What do you mean by her condition?" Heng suddenly asked, catching Nam's attention. She also wondered for a moment and cursed herself for missing that point.

The doctor looked between them, squinting her eyes. "Who are you two, exactly?"

"We're her friends," Nam said firmly, as if trying to prove a point.

"Well, your friend is pregnant," the doctor replied.

Their jaws dropped in disbelief. They stood there for a minute, unblinking, trying to process what they had just heard.

"What?" "How?!" they asked at the same time.

The doctor raised an eyebrow. "You're asking me?" she teased.

"Sorry!"

"If her partner is a woman, then I guess they might have been trying to conceive. IVF maybe." the doctor said.

"Yeah," Heng replied, and Nam looked at him, confused. She had no idea they were trying, so how did he?

"Judging by your reaction, I suppose she didn’t know either?" the doctor asked.

"No! It's just that they have been going through some things, and it hasn’t been easy between them," Heng said.

"Well, her partner should have thought about that before getting her pregnant," the doctor criticized.

"Can we see her?" Nam asked.

"Sure. Break the news yourself; it's better coming from a friend than from me or a nurse," she said before walking away.

Once the doctor was out of sight, Nam abruptly turned to Heng. "You knew they were trying?" she asked, her voice higher than usual.

"What?" His eyes widened in surprise. "No!"

"But you just said..." Nam began.

"For her to leave us alone," Heng interrupted.

After a moment of silence, Nam asked, "Do you really think they were trying?"

"Weren't they having problems before coming back?" Heng replied instead.

"So what are you suggesting?" Nam questioned.

He didn't answer, and they exchanged a knowing look. Nam suddenly looked away, shaking her head.

"No! No way! Freen would never do that to Becky. After everything that happened with Saint, I don't think she would ever cheat," she stated firmly.

"Let’s just talk to her," Heng said, gesturing for Nam to follow him inside the room.
