"I'm really sorry, Nam." Freen's face tightened as she managed a faint smile.

Nam and Heng exchanged confused looks. "Why are you apologizing?"

Freen sat up in bed and cleared her throat. "I should have listened to you. I should have taken better care of myself. I promise to eat, drink, and do whatever you tell me from now on."

Nam glanced at her, lips pressed together. "All it took for you was fainting," she joked.

Sighing in resignation, Freen replied, "This has never happened before. I usually know when I'm pushing my body too hard. This time, I was completely blindsided."

With a crooked smile, Nam raised an eyebrow. "Maybe there’s a reason for that."

Freen's face showed confusion. "What do you mean?"

"You are pregnant," Nam murmured.

Freen's eyes widened in surprise. "Come again?"

"You are pregnant, Freen," Nam said firmly this time.

"Oh!"

Nam's expression twisted in frustration. "Oh? Is that all?"

"What do you mean?" Freen asked, puzzled.

"How are you pregnant?" Nam inquired.

"Seriously?" Freen snorted.

"Whose is it?" Heng spoke for the first time since they entered the room.

She looked between her two friends in shock. "What are you implying?"

"Freen…" Nam stepped closer, reaching out to comfort her, but Freen held up a hand to stop her. "Don't! How can you even think that after everything I went through? How could you think for a second that I would ever cheat? You two are supposed to be my friends." Freen snapped.

"It's Becky's?"

"Yes," Freen replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

"How?"

"We’ve been trying. We were doing IVF, but the first two attempts didn’t work. So I thought it hadn’t worked this time either. Then Becky's father died, we came to Bangkok, and everything went wrong. I never thought this would be a possibility," Freen said, her voice breaking as she pressed her hands into her eyes.

"Why didn’t you say anything?"

Freen squeezed her eyes shut to hold back tears. "I really wanted to. But when it didn’t work, we were both so hurt. It was so hard, Nam. I just couldn’t tell anyone. We were struggling, and I think we started falling apart after that."

"Freen, you two aren’t even married. Is having a baby the right choice?" Nam asked.

Freen scoffed, anger flushing her face. "When we started dating, I told Becky I wanted to have a baby. We both agreed on it. So when the time felt right, we went for it. And like I said before, a piece of paper doesn’t define our family."

"We both know that’s not the whole story." Nam replied.

With a heavy sigh, Freen rolled her eyes but stayed silent.

"Freen, not every marriage is going to end like yours did. Becky is not Saint. She is not going to do what he did. You need to deal with your problems and your trauma too. When Becky comes back, you need to give her everything, especially now that you are having a baby," Nam reasoned.

"Freen, Becky made a choice. She decided not to let her past define her. She took a step forward. Now it’s your turn," Heng added.

"It's time for you to put the past behind you and decide to move on," Nam said gently, looking at Freen, who seemed to contemplate it.

"Put a ring on her finger and tell her she’s going to be a mother," Heng joked, trying to lighten the mood.

A smile appeared on Freen's face, and then laughter slipped out as her grin widened.

Maybe there was hope yet!
