delilah's first year

Harry brushed his little sister's chestnut hair into a braid. Although it was messy, it would have to do. The girl turned around with a bright smile on her face.

"How does it look?" Delilah asked him, opting not to look in the mirror in the bathroom. They both were not fond of going to the bathroom. Dudley made a new habit of needing to use the bathroom coincidentally when the two Potter siblings were occupying it.

"I think it looks nice enough, Lilah. I don't understand why you would want to wear something fancy when they won't see us anyway." The Dursley household was expecting the Masons tonight. Even though they were instructed not to be seen or heard, Lilah still wanted to dress up for the occasion.

Lilah shrugged at her brother. She stood up and walked over to Hedwig, showing off her braid. " Well, what do you think?" she asked the sweet owl. It hooted in response, making the siblings smile at one another.

Harry somehow always managed to be confused by his little sister and the things she did. Their decor around the room is one of them. The little plants Lilah put in all corners and on almost every surface. Communicating with them just like she talked to Hedwig like they were her friends.

"They really are my friends, Harry!" one day when she was little, she exclaimed, causing a smack to the back of the head from a petunia for being too noisy. Harry had no idea where she got the love of plants from; maybe it was from their wicked aunt.

Despite the cruelty, Lilah was kind to her aunt, aiding in the garden; it truly was her favorite thing. Petunia would never admit it, but Delilah had a green thumb and a knack for caring for the flowers.

Lilah loved looking after the greenery and the proud moment she saw them grow. Lilah's favorite was lilies; it made her feel connected to her mother. She had been able to get a white lily from the Dursleys' kind neighbor, Miss Nowls.

Gardening was also her way of using magic because maybe she wouldn't be as lucky as her older brother. When Harry told her about wizards who ended up not being able to perform magic even though they had it in their blood, she thought that if that was the case for her, she at least would have her plants.

It would be terrible if she didn't get her letter like Harry did a year ago. She made it her nightly routine to wish on the stars that she would be able to join her brother in the fall.

Little did she know magic surrounded her everywhere. Flowers grew when she spoke to them, and bubbles always seemed to be stronger around her, floating around her head when she took her shower. Of course, the young girl just thought it was a coincidence or something that happened to everyone.

Harry swore that she would get the letter; if she didn't, he would bring her anyway. "I'll stow you away in the suitcase," he said while she discussed her worries with him.

They heard their uncle yell at them, making Harry's face twist in dread. Lilah laughed at his expression. Leaning over to him, she whispered, "Race you down?"

He didn't waste a second responding before running out the door. Lilah tried to catch up but knew it would be no use. Harry jumped down the steps, with Lilah rushing behind him.

Panting, they both stood in front of Uncle Vernon, who looked at them with his normal grumpy expression. Harry ignored him and looked over his little sister, her body shaking slightly from their race. She had always been more affected by things like running, which made Harry constantly worried.

Aunt Petunia told Delilah as she grew up to watch herself, not because she cared, but because she was never in the mood to go to the hospital. She told the little girl that she had a weak heart, physically and emotionally, but the physical one could cost the family medical bills.
