delilah's first year

The breeze blew her brunette hair back as she stuck her head out the car window. Delilah looked over at her brother, sitting in the middle seat between her and Ron. They caught up with their summers with goofy smiles spreading across their faces.

This was the best way to celebrate her older brother's birthday; Delilah's present for him was pretty boring since they weren't allowed to leave the room. All she could do was clip off one of the flowers that bloomed from her lily of the valley and tie a small red ribbon in honor of his house color.

Although she had worked hard to take care of the unique flowers and their beauty, she wished she could give him more. It wasn't much but Harry might love the small gift that she had been working on since the beginning of summer.

Two boys older than her sat in the front of the flying blue car named Angelia, one gripping the steering wheel and laughing at the other. Lilah felt free for the first time, nowhere near the place that was turning into a literal prison.

Unsure she would even receive a letter from the wizard named Dumbledore, her nerves were at an all-time high. Delilah reminded herself to live in the moment; never would she think she would be in a vehicle zooming through the clouds and stars above.

They made it to the Weasley family home, which was charmingly named the Burrow. Delilah thought it looked beautiful, especially due to the pink hue of the sky and rolling hills.

Harry told her everything about the magical red-headed family and their kindness to him, Ron being the main character in all of his stories. She heard of the trouble-making twins who were gifted at quidditch—the game she really never understood even if Harry explained to her multiple times.

Delilah was weary of arrival; she had never been with so many people who would want to talk to her, and it was intimidating. At school, she was almost invisible, which was sometimes a blessing.

Kids had bullied Harry in his class because of the nasty behavior from Dudley. So Delilah counted herself lucky for not getting the same treatment.

The twins hushed the three younger kids and hurriedly pushed the door open into the home, closing it softly. Both Potters' eyes widened as they walked past the entrance.

It was indeed the magic that Delilah had heard all about. Not that she ever doubted Harry, but it just always seemed to take her breath away. Shuffling cards and a pair of knitting needles moving all by themselves, it was incredible.

Ron shrugged his shoulders, looked down with a self-conscious expression, and commented, "It's not much."

"I think it's brilliant!" Harry is quick to assure his friend. Delilah nods in agreement, still mesmerized by the magic in the home.

"WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?" Shouts a shrill and furious voice, causing the five of them to nearly jump out of their skin.

A sweet-looking woman moves in front of the children, who all seem to fear her. Delilah's face turns bright red, and she gulps as she looks down. Her first interaction with the woman she assumed to be the family's mother makes her instantly feel guilty.

Guilt and blaming herself were something that Harry would get frustrated with her about. Constantly telling her she had nothing to be sorry for, that it wasn't her fault regarding the Dursley family.
