Pov Nobody

Val had always admired how supportive her mother, Elaine, was. When she started dating Riley, she was excited for them to meet and hoped they'd get along as well as she did with her mother.

One Saturday, Val invited Riley over for a casual lunch at her mother's home. Elaine had prepared a lovely meal, and the atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable. Val felt a sense of satisfaction seeing Riley and her mother interacting so pleasantly.

After lunch, Elaine mentioned she needed to pick up a few things from the store. Riley volunteered to help clean up, and Val agreed, choosing to take a moment in the living room to unwind.

A few minutes later, Val heard some noise coming from the kitchen and went to check. As she approached, she noticed Elaine standing close to Riley, their faces close. Elaine seemed to be speaking softly, and then Val saw Elaine's head move slightly toward Riley. Val's heart skipped a beat as she quickly looked away, not entirely sure what she had seen but feeling a surge of discomfort.

Val's thoughts raced as she confronted Riley, her voice tinged with worry. "Riley, what just happened in there?"

Riley, looking flustered and surprised, tried to gather her thoughts. "Val, it was—" She hesitated, searching for the right words. "It was unexpected. I didn't really know how to react."

Elaine, who had followed them into the living room, stepped in with a calm but earnest expression. "Val, there's something I need to clarify. What you saw was a misunderstanding. I was trying to express something, and Riley didn't have the opportunity to respond."

Val, still processing the situation, turned to her mother. "Mom, it's important to respect boundaries, especially when it comes to my relationship."

Elaine's face showed genuine concern. "I understand. I acted impulsively and didn't fully consider the impact. I'm truly sorry for any discomfort caused. It wasn't Riley's fault."

Val took a deep breath, trying to manage her emotions. "I need some time to think about this. It's important for me to feel that my relationship is respected."

Elaine nodded, her voice steady. "I respect that, Val. I'll be here to talk whenever you're ready."

Riley, still visibly unsettled, looked at Val with empathy. "I'm here for you too," she said softly.

As the evening went on, the atmosphere was more subdued. Val, Riley, and Elaine engaged in a thoughtful conversation about their feelings and boundaries. Though the incident had created a moment of tension, they worked through it with a commitment to understanding and respecting each other's perspectives.
