 Vacation Blues

Denisha had been looking forward to her vacation for months, but now that it was here, she couldn't keep her mind off Dwayne. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw his smile, his tattoos, and that scar running down his chest. It was driving her crazy. She tried to focus on enjoying herself, but the thought of him was always there, nagging at the back of her mind.

Her new co-worker and trainee, Karen, had been a pleasant distraction, at least. Karen seemed to admire Denisha and wanted to be just like her. She was older, living with her elderly mother, and hadn't made any friends at work. She would call Denisha after work, just for some small talk. Eventually, Denisha bored out of her mind, invited her over for a drink after a long shift.

"Hey, girl!" Denisha greeted Karen as she walked in the door. "Come on in, make yourself at home. I hope you like Casamigos."

Karen smiled shyly and stepped inside

Karen smiled shyly and stepped inside. They chatted and laughed, easing into a comfortable rhythm. It was nice to have some company and take her mind off Dwayne, even if just for a little while.

"It's really hard at work without you there," Karen confessed, taking a sip of her drink. "The inmates are mean to me."

Denisha frowned. "I'm sorry to hear that. It'll get better, I promise. You just have to stand your ground."

Karen nodded. "Except for one inmate that keeps coming to medical asking for you. He actually gave me this letter to give to you."

Denisha's eyes widened in surprise as Karen handed her the letter. "Girl, rule number one: do not take anything from an inmate. They teach you that in orientation."

Karen's face fell, and she stuttered, "I-I-I thought it would be okay. I'm so sorry."

Denisha sighed, seeing the fear in Karen's eyes. "Listen, let's just keep this between us and pretend it never happened, okay? But promise me you'll never take anything from an inmate again."

Karen nodded vigorously. "I promise. It won't happen again."

They shook hands and continued to drink and laugh, letting the tension ease away. It was getting late, and the night was winding down.

As Denisha walked Karen to the door, she gave her a reassuring smile. "Good night, girl. Be safe."

"Good night!" Karen called back as she got into her car. "Thanks for everything, Denisha."

Denisha watched Karen drive away before heading back inside. She looked at the letter in her hand, curiosity gnawing at her. She unfolded it and read the words scrawled across the page.

Dear Ms. Jackson,

I can't stop thinking about you. Every time I see you, it's like my heart skips a beat. I know it's crazy, but I feel something between us. I hope you feel it too. I just wanted you to know that you're on my mind, always. I won't be here much longer, but I have a cell phone at my original camp in Augusta, GA. 1-706-345-2234

- Dwayne

Denisha's heart raced as she read the letter. She knew she was playing with fire, but the attraction she felt for Dwayne was undeniable. She folded the letter and tucked it away, a small smile playing on her lips.

Vacation or not, Dwayne had a hold on her, and she couldn't wait to see where this forbidden connection would lead.
