What did it mean to be alive? That was a question the puppet had asked themself since the moment they came to be. To be alive was to think, and to feel.

Could the puppet think and feel? Could the puppet do anything at all?

They were a puppet created by nen. They were a being connected to another, unable to live without their creator. Nen was the life source to all, nen was life. And life had a strange way of working.

The nen of their's creator had become their own. The puppet's life force was no longer shared, they were free from the shackles of their maker.

They were conscious. They were no longer as obedient, or simple minded as they once were. So their creator discarded them, deeming them to be a failure.

That was their first betrayal. Their own creator, their parent, had cast them aside.

After having been abandoned by their kin, they met a boy with grey eyes, which would glow red while in danger.

There was once such night the puppet could remember so vividly when they turned red. It was the night the puppet confessed what they truly were: a soulless husk of nen.

Their friend saw them as a monster, and cast them aside. The man they had trusted was so deeply afraid of the puppet he betrayed them.

Then, they met one last boy. He was small and frail, so easily breakable, but he was kind and gentle. He was just like the puppet a hope for the future.

He was the puppet's hope. He had helped the puppet understand what it was like to have a heart. What it was like to be alive. And for a while, the puppet truly believed they were living.

But, powerless before his own mortality, the boy had shattered the puppet's hope. He had died, and with him went the puppet's heart.

Without a heart, one could not live. And without a life, one could not die. No matter how much they wanted to.

Humans could never be trusted, they would only betray the puppet. The puppet would scrub every trace of human emotion from their body, and rebuild it to become strong enough to get revenge on those who had wronged them.

Then, and only then, would they be strong enough to take more life force, and gain their heart.
