QUIDDITCH TRIALS WERE a few weeks later, and the air was cold that Saturday morning. Hermione and Caroline huddled together, talking before trials started. Caroline liked quidditch, but she only really paid attention when Harry was playing. Luna was watching, and Romilda Vane was there, along with Lavender Brown, both of their eyes very obviously on Harry and Ron, annoying Caroline immensely. Hermione had only come with Caroline for Ron, hoping he got the keeper position he wanted.
Caroline tucked her hands into her jacket pockets, her right one covered in elastic to control the tremors. Her hair was big and full, the way it should be, with no judgement. Caroline caught Harry's eyes from the field, sending him a light smile, one that he returned as he gathered all of the Gryffindors trying out for the team. Hermione read a book next to her, and Caroline would have done the same thing, but she was too enthralled with her boyfriend to look away.
Harry tried and failed to get the attention of the kids trying out, so Ginny shouted at them, the group silencing. Harry spoke, and then the group dispersed, waiting until the position they were trying out for was tested. Hermione put her novel away, waving to Ron. Caroline narrowed her eyes at Cormac something (Caroline didn't care to learn his last name) talking to Ron, and then looking at Hermione. "Tell me you don't like him." she said.
Hermione's eyes widened. "Absolutely not." she denied, looking away in disgust, hoping Cormac would move away, and he did after another moment, Ron looking unnerved.
Harry wore number seven because it was Caroline's favourite number. There wasn't any particular number, she just liked it. The girls watched as Cormac and Ron took spots defending the goals, opposite each other. Lavender muttered to herself, looking at Ron. People cheered from the stands and on the pitch, but Caroline was busy watching Harry.
Unfortunately, Cormac was doing great. Even Ginny couldn't land a goal with him guarding. Every shot he saved was exceptional. Then it was Ron's turn. Caroline said a quick prayer, watching as Ron didn't let a shot in, but he was messy and sloppy, resorting to using the top of his head. "There goes the rest of his brain cells." Caroline said with a smile, Hermione slapping her arm in her stressed out state.
Ron clung to his broom as he slid off, trying hard to get back on. He managed to remount his broom, but Caroline could tell just by looking at Harry that Cormac was doing much better. Hermione took matters into her own hand. "Confundus." she whispered behind her hand, into her shoulder.
Caroline whipped her head over to her. "Hermione Granger, what did you just do?" she asked, a smile breaking onto her face.
Hermione ignored her as a quaffle was thrown at Cormac, the boy sliding away and missing the save entirely. "I have no idea what you're talking about." Hermione pushed down her smile, and when trials were over, Ron had a perfect record.
The girls left the pitch. "You go on ahead. I'll meet you in the common room." Caroline said to Hermione, stepping back as her friend nodded, continuing on. Caroline always waited for Harry after games and trials. She had since second year, it was just routine.
The quidditch players left the pitch after changing, some of them ecstatic, most of them upset. Ron had managed to become the new Gryffindor keeper, and he was thrilled as he left the pitch with his friends.
