AN: I've finally read Nightshade and Nightshade Revenge, and they are amazing, really. So I might make some references to these two books and obviously some things won't be following what happened after the last book.

This is the new chapter, it took me a while to write it 'cause I knew were I wanted it to go but not how to go there but I still you are going to like it!

NEVER LET MAC IN A JANITOR CLOSET, IT WOULD DEFINITELY GO BOOM.

"Guys we need to go! They've spotted us!" Mac urged through the comms. Right after, they heard an explosion.

"What was that?" Jack asked.

"Mac encountered a janitor closet. A full one "Bozer stated the obvious.

"You know vinegar, carbon carbide and hydrogen peroxide work miracles," Mac said.

"In English please, hoss."

"Welding kit and chemicals."

"We'll meet at the car, big bad Russians on their way!" Riley shouted.

Jack and Alex rushed back the way they came. People were shouting in russian. Screams coming from behind them. In their haste, they forgot to check the exit corridor and ended face to face with the bad guys. Sarov was in front of them flanked by the two men from the café.

"Hello gents, we got lost in your beautiful home. Care to show us the way out?" Jack joked.

Before they could fire, Alex kicked their guns from their hands and got in a fistfight with one of them. Jack was doing the same. For Jack, it was an even fight: the man kicked him in the knee but not hard enough to make him fall and Jack took the opportunity to elbow his opponent in the stomach and punched him hard with the back of his hand to his left ear. The Russian, disoriented, stumbled back and Jack proceeded to knock him unconscious. For Alex, the fight wasn't that fair. The man he was fighting was a giant and even if Alex went to training every morning with one of his team members, he was in shape but not enough to beat this man. Worse, from the corner of his eyes he could see Dimitri Sarrov getting away. So when Jack decided to come and help him in his fight against the Russian, Alex went after Sarov. The man was trying to reach the end of the building where trucks were parked. Alex ignored Jack shouting at him to wait and cornered Sarov between two trucks. Even though he had no intent to use it, or at least not for now, Alex aimed his gun at him, muscles tensed, trying to prevent his hands from shaking.

"Surrender Sarov!" Alex demanded with faked assurance.

"Don't think I am going to do that boy," the man replied with a heavily accented english.

"Your plan's never going to work, every authority knows what you are planning. You will never get that bomb to blow up in Paris."

"Whatever agency you are from boy, CIA, MI5 or MI6, you don't know anything about my plan and you don't know a thing about how to stop me." Sarov took a step back, his right hand going behind his back. Before Alex could run, Sarov took a tiny toy-like-gun from his belt and fired. Alex reacted at the last moment a move slightly out of the bullet path but not enough. The bullet hit his left shoulder with remarkable force, the impact pushing Alex to the ground. Sarov took the opportunity to run and fled in one of the unregistered vehicles.

Alex pushed himself to his feet the moment Jack arrived, panting.

"I'm fine," Alex quickly said.

"We may have a very different definition of the word 'fine', hoss. Mine is not 'I have a bullet wound in my shoulder that is fucking bleeding'!" Jack angrily retorted.

"It's nothing, really. We should go back to the others. What about the two guys you put down?"

"Oh they fled when I decided that it may be important to check if my partner just got shot," Jack snorted.

Alex heavily sighed and they made their way out of the empty building. The others were waiting beside the car and their eyes widened in panic as they saw Alex got shot.

"What happened?" Riley asked.

"Let's get out of here first, shall we?" Jack replied when Alex simply went past them to get in the car without answering.

They find an empty parking lot facing a huge mountain to spend the night. They set their tent not far from the car. While Mac and Bozer went to find some woods to build a fire and Riley was in a car trying to download a satellite view from Point Blanc, Alex was sitting on a bench, trying to tend his wound by himself.

Jack silently sat down next to him, "Let me help you." He didn't wait for an answer and took the medical kit from Alex's hand and began to disinfect his wound. Alex winced in pain but did not make any sound.

"What happened back there?" Jack asked.Of course he knew what happened, but he wanted to know why Alex did it. Alex was still not looking at him, like he was ashamed.

"I was stupid. I went after Sarov and didn't even realize he was armed."

"Why? Why did you go after him?"

Alex was taken aback by the question, "Because he is the guy we came all the way down here to stop..."

"Only for that reason?" Jack pushed.

Alex just shrugged. Frankly, he didn't even know why he did it. To stop him? Because he looked like Alexei Sarov? To prove something?

"You know, shortly after we first met, I promised to someone that I will stop all that spy thing. I was really thinking about reconsidering Matty's offer. But then, you know me by now, I can't just stand there and do nothing when I know I could do something. But that's selfish of me, because my choice puts people I care about in danger. Sabina, Jack, Tom," Alex shuddered as he remembered what had happened two years ago against Nightshade. "And now you guys. You are like family to me. I don't know if I'm strong enough to protect all of you," he admitted.

"Hey, you listen to me. You don't do the protecting, that's what i'm here for. You don't have to worry about not being able to protect us. We are family, we protect each other."

"I heard what you told Gaby's parents," Alex said, he didn't want to put it so directly but that was part of his reasons for acting so recklessly.

"I meant it. You are like a son to me Alex."

"That's the problem, my family tends to be hurt badly. And hearing you say that, it made our family more real and now I'm scared to..."

"Lose us. I understand that," Alex didn't seem convinced so he went on, "I always wanted kids, a big family, ya know. But at the time, the army was where I had to be. Same with the Deltas. I'm good at my job Alex and because of that, for the same reason you do, I can't just stay home and do nothing. I thought I would never have a family and then I met Riley, Mac, Bozer and you, Alex. You're my kids, all of you. You, it's a bit different, you were so young when we first met that I immediately switched on dad mode. Of course I'm afraid of losing you every time we go on the field, but I know that you are strong enough to survive anything. It's okay to be afraid of losing people. You just need to remember that we also are afraid of losing you."

Alex gazed at him with teary eyes but said nothing. Jack took his phone out and sent someone a message.

"Mac and Bozer are back, we should go eat," Jack proposed. Alex nodded and they made their way to the campfire.

Once they finished their sandwiches, Jack stood up and cleared his throat like he was about to announce something big, "I talked to Matty and she said that we'll have some days off for Christmas, unless she really needs us. And I asked Mama to count us for Christmas Eve and Christmas, and she'll be happy to."

Everyone was ecstatic, Alex was a little nervous, "I've never met your mum."

"You met her, remember our video chats when you moved to America?"

"I know but I've never actually met her," Alex clarified.

"Don't worry, she already adopted you into the family."

"You'll see, she's like Jack but better," Riley assured him, Jack punched her arm jokingly.
