I yawn for the fifth time that afternoon.

Slumping down against my desk, I doodle on my notebook. The teacher stares at everyone sitting, most of which were already dozed off or chatting away idly, with no care in the world.

I don't blame her though, whether she teaches us or not, she gets paid. It's our fault for chatting away and not paying attention during class.

Movement to my right catches my attention, the steady tapping of a beat against the wooden table makes it harder to even concentrate.

"Are you okay?" I ask Lucy, my eyes tracing how tense her face is.

"Yeah," she mutters, biting her lips. "I'm fine."

I stay silent, observing how she keeps fidgeting with her pen. "Are you sure?"

She stares at me for a while, maybe contemplating on whether to tell me or not.

After a few minutes, she curses under her breath, turning her body to directly face me. "My parents already have universities they want my brother and I to attend."

"Yeah?"

"I don't want to go." she blurts, clicking the pen in her hands continuously, an habit I've noticed she has.

"And why's that?" I ask with caution.

Everyone has a reason for everything. Lucy always obeys whatever her parents want for her, as I've noticed, so her wanting to go against their word means she has her reasons.

"Darya, I don't want to study biology or how people have sex and reproduce, my novels talk about that in detail for me to know what I want to know," she smiles, before her face goes serious when she remembers what she's saying. "I want to learn about art."

"Then go for it." I tell her, tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Life's too short for one to keep thinking ‘should I or shouldn't I’. You only live once."

"Yes I know but I don't know how to tell my parents. My dad would follow whatever I say, but my mom," she stills, eyes trailing away in thoughts. "she'd prolly be devastated."

"What do you want to study?"

She frowns when she hears my question. "Art..?"

"There's your answer." I point out, watching how her lips part. "You've never gone against your parents Lu, they'd understand when you finally tell them what you really want."

"You think so?"

"I know so." I say, reassuring her and she nods.

I glance at my wristwatch, seeing that this period would soon be over.

I face Lucy again. "Need to go to the restroom for a bit. Be right back."

I push myself off the chair, making my way over to the front to ask the teacher for permission but she just waves me off when she sees me approach her.
