The library was quiet.
Only the sound of my harsh breathing filled the air and the annoying sound of Ethan's nails hitting the table we were both sitted at.
Asthma has always been a part of my life for as long as I could remember. The reality of being locked up in the same room as my rival who disliked my entire being raised a familiar sensation that tugged at my chest, causing panic to churn inside me, resulting to the attack. The same said 'rival' got me my inhaler and coached me through my ragged breathing, ignoring my stifled wheeze.
I've never been embarrassed of my health issue; since I've accepted it and taken it to be a part of me but having an attack right in front of Ethan was embarrassing to say the least and this silence is making me really uncomfortable.
"Well if this isn't fun." I say, playing with my inhaler in my hands, my breathing becoming evened and returning to its normal rate.
"I'm having so much fun now. Yayyy." His tone is so fake, the words practically fall from the air from how much plastic they were made of.
"Alright..." I sigh, sealing my lips shut as I look around the library. "Finally we're sharing a living space. isn't this exciting?"
His tapping on the wood stops, his eyes on mine before darting around the room.
"Exciting? I'd use a different word."
"And that is?" I ask, dropping my forearms on the table, glad the long table is keeping us far apart.
"Inconvenient."
I push myself off the wooden chair, making my way to the bookshelf. "We'd be like those couples in movies who can't stand each other at first but end up falling madly in love."
He was silent and I thought he didn't hear me because of the distance until I turned around.
His eyes were narrowed on me, trying to read me. He looked like he was picking me apart with his eyes, searching for something even I wasn't sure of. An emotion crosses his eyes and when I blinked it was gone, only the usual annoying indifferent expression on his face.
"If you have a crush on me," he says, yawning. "just say so."
"Crush?" I laugh, gripping the bookshelf to steady myself. "On you? I'd rather jump off a cliff than be attracted to you."
"Famous last words sweetheart," he sighs, setting his legs on the table, making the dirt beneath his shoes drop on it. "famous last words."
I walk towards him before smacking his legs off the table, to which he glares at me.
"It's almost as if you want me to fall in love with you."
"I'm literally every girl's dream. You must be something else if you don't find me a bit attractive." he smirks cockily.
